hey Doc, ok it rattles as soon as you start it, when you turn the engine with spanner you here the sound when No2 cylinder is open at top, when you turn the motor back you hear the same sound, to it sounds like something spring loaded flicking back the motor is 2.8 1996 vintage with 189000kms on the clock, been an expensive excerise, owner has changed turbo, waterpump, steering pump and injectors all for advice for so called mechanics
regards
Rod

If it is low down on the engine, it could be big end or main bearings.
If it sounds like marbles rattling around, more than the normal diesel noise then it's most likely big end bearings. The mains will be more heavy sounds.
If it's higher up then it could be piston slap, or gudgeon pins

The late model diesel's make a horrible rattle at and just above idle. Sounds like there is no oil in them but its just the way they are.

Funny. My 06 work and 07 Play are both very quite at idle. Funny how others can get a different idea. Cheers Tony

There is a cold start valve on the injector pump that adds more fuel at idle when first started. If this valve is faulty they will run rich at idle and just above giving a stronger that normal diesel knock. It its been faulty for a while you may think this is a standard engine noise. Its not and should be looked at but a pump specialist.
Personally I think Rodeo's have the noisiest engine on the market but thats just my opinion.

If it is a 2.8TD 4JB1 engine it could be the timing gear bolts. They have a habit of coming loose. Could also explain the hard to start.

gaday Matt
Do you have to take off the crankshaft pully to remove the timing cover or is there an easier way of doing it

Yes the pulley needs to come off. There are some small bolts holding the gears on and they can come loose and break or drop off.
