I have a Powerwinch 912 to haul my boat onto its trailer. There is a black plastic knob that you tighten to change it from free spool to pulling. Lately this has started to self tighten as I winch in putting a bigger load on the winch and requiring a set of stilsens to undo it even though it should only be hand tight Something is wrong. Any one out there familiar with this winch and could advise of the problem and solution?

Ma,
I don't have your winch but I do have one I bought from SuperCheap which i suspect may have that similar black knob.
Mine has done a similar thing on a couple of occasions.
I found that
the knob was getting a bit hard to tighten and loosen off so I loosened it right off and greased the thread and the washer that
the knob screws in against and it fixed the problem.
Anyway this worked on my winch.

Hi Mal,
http://www.powerwinch.com/powerwinch/controller?action=contact
This url is the contact page for Powerwinch in the USA. Maybe leaving a note about the problem will get you some advice from them. Worth a try. I have had a couple of dealings with US firms with fishing gear and so far have always found them extremely helpful. In one case I lost the spring clip off my Scientific Angler fly reel. I asked them if I could buy a replacement and they sent me 5 for free and then followed up a few weeks later to make sure all was OK. PENN were also very accommodating when I had a hassle with one of their reels and sent me a free handle.
