Mike,
I have a panasonic toughbook mounted in the patrol. I searched high and low for a decent mounting system. The RAM PoD system is OK if you never go off road but the legs are just not strong enough once you hit the roughstuff. Even moderate bumps will have them bending. The Computer tray they have is great and I use this. I had Brown Davis automotive in Bayswater make a custom mount that fits to existing
seat mounts. I then just sit the laptop tray on top of that. Make sure you get a screen brace whatever you decide.
Mine worked exceptionally
well on the last trip and didn't move an inch despite being in the roughest country possible.
There is a picture of the set-up on my profile page.
Cheers Mick
P.S. I have a RAM Pod system here if you consider going down that path. MM me. Mick

Just a question of thought, is it legal to have these laptops mounted in the front of the car where they can be viewed by the driver? I dont see why it should be, even off road. The last thing i want to do is cross a dune or come round a corner and have someone with there head buried in there laptop coming at me. Does anyone know about this law, as i have been done for having a DVD screen in my car that is visible to me while driving.

It varies from state to state I'd imagine. You can get television in the high end saloons so I'd imagine if it's going thru your double din in dash screen, it's probably OK. In Vic, I think it's about not obscuring your forward vision so technically, those windscreen mounted thingos might be a bit of an issue.
As far as a mounted computer is concerned, most of us use it for moving maps so it's basically used outback. I know from my usage I'm really only watching it when I'm off track as do most. Most times I've seen it in use, the passenger (usually the missus) is the navigator so again no issue. The way
mine is mounted it can be utilised by either but does not encroach on drivers forward vision. Common sense I s'pose.
Cheers. Mick

Yeah GPS screens too, i would of argued my case a little had i thought of these things. I agree its all common sense but so is a lot of things, and safety on the roads is paramount. Alot of the city folk would be glued to theres looking at maps while driving, and i for one know that some people are terrible drivers in the bush at the best of times, never mind paying more attention to where they are then to what there doing. I was nearly cleaned up numerous times this year on the Gibb, and they didnt even have the guts too wave in recognition.
In no way am i saying or having a go at anyone here, i am all for technology in the outback. And technology that makes life easier and could possibly be life saving is a big bonus. Just thought that the Authorities might of put a damper on them for the similar reasons they have banned other interior devices.
