Rear Wheel carriers for 100 series (105 actually)

I'm going to put a twin wheel carrier on a 105. I was just going to get a Kaymar with a HF bracket and the work light but I was thinking about how the Mrs struggles a bit with my current over bumper Kaymar.
I was looking at the ARB units that are slam shut and probably easier to use but they don't look as robust as the Kaymar.
This thing will see everything the country can through at it next year and be opening and closing many times a day. I have heard that dust and corrugation have caused owners some drama with these beasties so any advice??

The trick would be to service it. keep it clean and do maintenance on it in your travels

I have one on my 99 GXL.
Robust, I pitty the fool who rear ends me!
Gas strutted so they stay open when vehicle is on a lean. I didn't realise how much that used to p#%s me off!
The locking latches are fully adjustable, giving a nice snug fit when slammed shut so it won't shake and rattle itself to death! The hand grip style latches to unlock are by far the best feature, the missus has no complaints!
Like everything bolted to a fourby, dust and corrigations will destroy your gear. Look after it, tweaking servicing bit of lube and a high pressure wash down and I am yet to have any problems!
They are a pricey unit, but I believe you get what you pay for when it comes to this piece of heavy duty equipment.
they look bloody smart too!

Do you have the ARB or the Kaymar?
I agree about the snug fit ,its what will make them go the distance on corrugations

I acquired an old Opposite Lock carrier and put it on the back of the 80. It did stirling service, until one day it became floppy. I thought a ha, bearings. Took it off and the inside tube had disdintegrated. A machine
shop made me up a solid tube. No more problems. Its lasted and lasted.
Original purchase price s/h was $400, so I'm a happy camper.
As for rear ending, a solid structure won't allow as much damage except in a serious incident which can do damage elsewhere.
I call my tow bar my vehicle deflector. :))

Hi Joff1,
Ask a lot of questions about fitting. I have a Standard 100 series and both Kaymar and ARB said their rear bar with two spare wheels will NOT fit a standard 100 with
barn doors. I bought the TJM one as they were the only company which said it would fit. Issue is the number plate light on the LHS door protruding too much. I must say that I am totally happy with the TJM bar, although they originally included two RHS wheel carriers and no LHS one.

Have had the twin carrier Kaymar on the back of the standard diesel 100s for 8 years now. We live in the
Pilbara and it has copped a lot of corrugations, dust, rain and every thing else including a light rear end from a 2wd, which incidently did not even scratch the paint, just left a little of their paint behind. I have only recenyly replaced the locking pins that keep the arms open. My wife is far from being a gladiator and she can handle them with no problems. I did have to mount the lhs latch hook on some thick
conveyor rubber to get clearance for the
barn door handle, but in all this time nothing has come loose and I have had no problems.

Thanks for the replies guys, I will have to go have a look at all of them I think. I really like the slam shut thing on the ARB but, to be honest, I don't really like the look of them that much. I'd prefer a Kaymar because I have had the singles and trust them but no slam shut.
I let you know what I decide.

We have Kaymar. have replaced the locking pins too. Its enoying opening them all the time but id rather have the spares there than under. We have an extended tow bar so we can still open the back when the van is on. we had a flap sewen in the middle of the wheel cover to keep the number plate on.Image Could Not Be Found

Had the ARB one one the last 100 series, worked pretty good for a while, but long term reliabilty would be a concern. I too got it for the ease of use by the better half. Looked pretty good too...
Latch system doesnt like dust and no way would it handle twin steel rimmed 33in tyres long term with corrugations (you wouldn't believe the way it 'shook' when watched in the rear view mirror on rough tracks). Can't run 35's.
I have the oppposite lock twin wheel carrier on this car, and even with two steel rimmed 35" wheels (only carrier I know of that 'just' fits twin 35's), hasn't failed yet. And I know I'm asking a lot of it. It also has gas struts like the ARB unit.
The wife can operate it, and the newer style latches have full surround handles so she won't injure herself (I got the guys to fit the newer handles when I bought the bar).

Thanks for all the replies guys. Between you and the 2 seperate ARB dealers that have told me that Kaymar will suit my needs better, I think I'll go with plan 'A'.
Got a quote of $3.2k for a twin with HF mount. Pretty good from what I can make out.

Why not look at the Strongarm wheel carrier in WA, I bought one for my GU, half the price of Kaymar and the have 2 High lift jacking points either side.
They are very sturdy, I have been extremly happy with
mine.
They fit most of the 4wd's in the mines with there wheel carriers.
Im in
Sydney and I had it packaged and transported across for $140.00
