Planning to take an overseas couple down the Oodnadatta track about this time next year from Alice Springs. Want to visit Chambers Pillar, Mt Dare, Dalhousie etc. then on down to Oodnadatta, Marree and the Flinders

One of the group went through Finke some years ago and was a bit intimidated by the locals. Want to make the trip as enjoyable and memorable as possible for our guest but don't want them being confronted or taking back unpleasant memories of this great land of ours.

Is there currently a problem in the area? Can we safely stop in Finke to look around, talk to the locals etc. or should we just hurry through with the windows closed

Respect and understanding is key; treat the inhabitants as you would want to be treaded and I doubt yo will have any problem

I've stopped at Fincke and not experienced any problem.

I travelled the area in 2004/5 and found no problems at all.

Sat down with a few groups in the area and talked about the things they care about.

Sat with a dozen or so in Oodnadatta in the internet cafe, found em very friendly.

Take em as you find em, if they are looking agro leave em alone, if they want to talk, talk to em. Actually that sounds a bit like I am at times?

Gday,
You will probably have more trouble hiding your friends from a bad expierence in Alice at the moment rather than the communities.
Because of the intervention most of the trouble makers have moved into town.
But still put yourself in there position,.....If you were sitting down on your porch doing nothing and a convoy of blackfellas pulled up, wandered over and started asking all about your life, how would you respond. A lot of these people dont like visitors, some do.
If you want to have a chat, try calling in at the ACPO's house and asking him who you should be talking to.
Finke is generally one of the better communities and they arent to bad with visitors as they are used to it , being on a busy road.
Just check the situation first.

Have Fun
P.S Dont take any grog or youll get hung out to dry!

Didnt stop in at Finke except for a quick chat with a local and all was fine. Go in ith some respect and all should go well. The only bad experience Ive heard of with people in a community is my friend who is an occupational therapist for the communities around Alice....she has some shocking stories that could put anyone off....!
Oodnadatta has great hot chips!

You'll be fine and take every experience home!

Please don't tar everyone with the same brush.
As already posted, the right attitude and sensitivity will see your friends leave without any lasting bad memories.
The locals vary from community to community and town to town, sometimes from day to day. Every local is different, just like the rest of Australia. Certainly they can be very different to what you might expect if you're from o/s, but do remember that there are some nice people and sometimes, some others.
Some might have some very unpleasant memories of our mob also.
Finke has been an early study in intervention. Some think it's gone well in some regards, some rekkon it's been a disaster. It probably depends upon which side of the fence you are sitting.
But chances are, if you follow the advice given, your friends will be fine.

Footy, Well said, my wife and I have travelled this great Outback land for 20+ yrs and have had great experiences, Our motto is simple
treat everyone equal and don't place our expectations on how someone should live !! Yes we have occasionally come across some "grumpy" people from all walks of life. BUT that's what makes life so interesting "EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT" enjoy the experience
Just get out there and "Do It"
Be happy, Don't worry
Safe Travels

Respect is the key, nothing else, and don't stare !

Be a little street smart in Alice, especially at night, and you will be fine, other than that everything should be OK !

Cheers

Bucky

Yeah,, Abos are pretty good around those parts.
When we were at Oodnadatta this year,,,, one showed us around the train museum and told us about history of Oods and surrounds..
Do your own thing without encrouching in their turf and you should be fine..
The only time we have had trouble with Abos is in capital cities and Port Augusta..

Abo = Aboriginal.
Oods = Oodnadatta.

It is an abbreviation.

You are right, i didnt say it to "their" face.

I agree, Aboriginal i as easy to say as Abo,,,, but i wasnt saying it, i was typing it and it is a hell of a lot harder to type it.

Thank you for your opinion, i have taken it on board.

But i dont really give a rats what you think as i have my own hassles to deal with without having to worry about yours.
Probably better keeping things like that to yourself if you dont want curry back.

Regardless of whether you give a 'rats' or whatever your hassles are, your comments are offensive, as you probably fully intended them to be.
Give me as much 'curry' as you like, it won't change my opinion of you.

Dont tell me that "i probably intended it to be offensive".
When you dont even know me.
I cant help you having a fragile personality, but i know one thing.....
It's guys like you with your fragile personalities which cause the most trouble.
Look back in history.

Anyway,,

And curry, there aint enough curry in this world to scare me off. I will be the better man here and end this discussion.

I stopped there a couple of weeks ago and spoke to a woman at the petrol pump. No problems - everyone was friendly.
