Hi all,
Have recently bought second hand Patrol 03 diesel and want to change engine oil myself, wondering what do I need, are there any traps? Do I just need the one oil filter etc?
Any suggestions welcome thanks.

Might help if you tell us all if it is a 3.0 or 4.2. If it is a 4.2 is it turbo or not.

You'll need about 8.5 litres of oil, a Half inch socket extension to fit the filter housing and a socket to fit the drain plug

A oil drain container of at least 10 litres.

Make sure you warm up the engine first

Can't remember the size of the oil drain plug but you'll need a bit of clearance to get under the truck. A couple of solid ramps under the front wheels was all I used.

You open up the OIl filter housing about a turn and a half and there is a oil drain guide that "Hopefully"directs the oil from the filter down into the drain pan before you remove the housing altogether and replace the cartridge. Can't remember the torque settings for the filter housing or the drain plug.

crikeys give me a cruiser any day.
tools - 1 shifter and 1 bucket 1 funnel no ramps etc
oil- 10l. Oil comes in 10 litre containers so its simple drrain the oil, refill then get the used oil and chuck it back in the container

the most common funel at supercrap screws straight into the oil filler neck so theres no holding funnels and pouring

oil filter - easily rechable and tightens/untightens by hand

I know, I hear you never have to change the oil in the new V8 Yota Diesel, It uses that much oil they call it a continual loss system, like a two stroke!

If this is the first one you have done I would get a trusted friend to guide you through it.

Hi there

Don't make the mistake of many others, and use the front plug as the drain. It's NOT. It's a tapered thread and when you try to do it up again, you'll crak the sump

Hi there, at the risk of getting shot down in flames, why bother doing it yourself? I used to years ago when the sump plug & oil filter was easy to get at, you didn't need special tools & you could get rid of of the waste oil with out much hassle.
These days I get it done by the mob that service our vehicles.

Quick, simple and relatively cheap and no risk of oil spill in my garage & anyway I would not have a clue as to where to dispose of the waste oil and filter. So I gave away doing it myself, the small & in my opinion questionable saving is not worth the trouble. The only proviso is you need to be dealing with a reputable workshop. Just my opinion. Good luck

Gday Barry,

Fair comment, but its easier than it used to be.
The Fed Govt started an oil recycling program, so our council tip take up to 20litres of oil for free. I still service all our family cars (6 of them), so it has become a regular trip for me!

Cheers
Phil
