Hi Balko - reading some of the fridge repair sites - these symptoms suggest that you have a blockage in the cooling unit which. The same site suggests this sort of problem is expensive to fix. Have a look at this site - www.camec.com.au/Q&A.htm. Hope this helps.Doc

Relevant information from the site.

It contained 13 posts of various problems with different models of 3 way fridge's

. . . . NONE at all about compressor type fridge

Does that tell you something about the most efficient type of portable fridge ?

If you don't like them don't buy one - simple.

I've owned two of them for some years and think they are great for extended stays.

Mike it's not a matter of liking or disliking them, I was simply pointing out the relevant number of problems associated with 3 way fridge when compared to Compressor type fridges, the numbers are there to be verified.

Yes, they may work terrific for you and also some other people, but then the compressor fridge has no mention at all of any problems, while the 3 way fridge has 13, and remember, that may not be relevant either, because they may get up to 100 posted problems b4 there is a compressor fridge problem, as there must be hundreds of compressor fridges out there when compared to 3 way fridges anyway.

I'm sure more compressor fridges are presently in use than 3 way fridges by EO members?

>because they may get up to 100 posted problems b4 there is a
>compressor fridge problem

Or last month there may have been 200 compressor fridge posts and none about 3 ways...? Or maybe not many people who post to that site own compressor fridges. Or maybe the site owners filter post for their own reasons. Most certainly there is no valid statistical data on the merits of either technology to be had from that site.

As I said; if you don't like them, don't buy one but a lot of people are more than happy with them.

Mike, yes your correct, those numbers you mention may have been there last month or may even be there next month, but right here an now this month they are not there.

I'm only pointing out the facts what are there now to be read now, this month.

It is not about liking or disliking them, but the numbers of questions (problems) asked about 3 way v compressor fridges.

It's not a personal thing - for me anyway, just the numbers.

If you count the number of Solar problems to keep electric fridges going I think it swings back the other way heavily.

Yes, there are many, even very many, "Solar and Battery/wire issues" with 12v installations, but they are only *installation* faults and not a product (fridge) fault or should I selectively use the word 'inconsistency' because of the 3way's more finicky nature, as is clearly shown by the questions/answers on the site link in question.

When the solar/storage battery system is correctly sorted there are then no further power supply problems.
This can simply be confirmed by asking those with solar systems if they are happy with their system and would use the same type of power system once again, given the opportunity and if not what are the inherent problems associated with them (in a new thread of course)

Mainey, many people would say most gas fridge probelms are instalation / operational / understanding issues.

I have both and they are horses for courses IMHO.

Solar ain't a lot of good in the high country at times - summer or winter and a set up that can last for a week or so is expensive. On the other hand if you throw a bit of money at a good solar based fridge set up it is a great solution.

Mass Debate about the pros and cons of various technologies doesn't add a lot of value to the poster's issue though. :-)

BB,
true, hence my (in a new thread of course) statement !!

Solar is only the charging source for the Storage Battery system, if the battery system is too small, no amount of solar panels is enough :-))

Pick it up and shake it around plenty, upside down, the works.
don't let it sit, light the gas straight away and you'll probably find it works ok. The "coolant" sticks and won't flow properly when it has sat level or relatively still and not being used.
My van fridge has done the same a few times now as it is onsite and sits unused most of the time. A good shake up (hard with a 3/4 size van fridge!) has always got it going.

G'Day Balko,

Had the same fridge in a caravan with the same symptoms.

The fridge is working fine for the type of fridge and the way it is installed.

The only real solution is to swap it for a "T" rated fridge or a compressor fridge, which is what we did.

The RM2330 will really only cool to about 20C below ambient temperatures. The freezer works off the fridge so it will cool 20C below this - to about 40C below ambient - make sense?

Fridge during a hot day sits on 10C - 15C, freezer sits on 0C.

Correct installation will assist but will never solve the design limitations. There are things you can check, which I can detail if interested.

Regards

Rolande

Hi Rolande,

Those figures (10-15C for fridge and 0C for freezer) are scary.

If thats the best you can get in hot weather you run a pretty high risk of food going "off" and the subsequent possibility of food poisoning. Not particularly funny when you are miles away from a Dr................
Your beer is not cold enough either and that IS important.

I had a similar problem with my old van so bought a 240V bar fridge and a 2K genset that lived on the back of the ute full time, used it for work as well. Solved the problem till I sold that van. Bar fridge now sits in the Bar.

Current van has 90L 240/12V Engel inbuilt Runs at 4C and -10C in freezer compartment...........Beer comes out at ideal drinking temp.

Just my opinion,

Disco.

I have a gas fridge for the first time and this will be the last time. The compressor fridges with a solar panel are the way to go as we had used this set up previously with an Engel. The current 3 way we have has been nothing short of a nightmare and we have lost plenty of food de to it inadequate cooling whilst travelling between locations on 12 volt. It just makes the grade on gas when up north but that's it and you have to be meticulous with the level of these fridges. If not forget it.

Thanks to all for your input. Rolande you might be spot on because ive been in the gulf in pretty hot weather so you might be right. The fridge has near been shaken to death 2000 ks of dirt and corros through the gulf so it is really shaken up. As for compressor fridges my 80 ltr waeco has a faulty compressor module $250 bucks later its on its way up here its 4months over 3 yrs so its out of warranty and yes im on a bad roll. Cheers and thank you Balko
