Moreton Island

My family and a few friends are heading to Moreton Island in January for our annual holidays.

Firstly, what is the best place to camp and secondly should we take anything special other than the normal camping stuff.

We are Mexicans (Victorians) so have pity on us as we are still grieving about the Storm loss.

Hi,

Camping spots are varied but I would suggest you go to www.epa.qld.gov.au and click on camping bookings. From here you can find Moreton from an alphabetic selection and this will give a good insight into the different locations to camp and the other requirements such as vehicle permits etc.

You now have to prebook for camping and you can't just show up and hope for a spot so once you decide where you want to camp try and book the spot on the epa website.

Unless things have changed in the last couple of weeks, currently you can't buy fuel on the island so make sure you are self sufficient in that regard. Also the Barge from Scarborough to the North of Brisbane no longer operates so the main transport is via MICAT from the mouth of the Brisbane River. Go to www.micat.com.au for their info. Basic supplies can be purchased at the shop at Bulwer or the resort shop at Tangalooma.

There is no doctor on the island but the ambulance are there for emergencies only and are available via 000 in the event of an emergency. Mobile phone coverage is good near the resort at Tangalooma and patchy in most other places.

Lower your tyres to around 18 to 20 PSI and you should get around quite well.

January will be hot and you could experience afternoon storms also. Take good quality sand pegs, water containers and the usual camping gear.

If you like to fish then you have some good options for catching bream, flathead, whiting etc and you can try and get your own live bait or else you can buy it on the island.

You have the choice of camping on the calm water side of the island or the surf side.

It is a great spot and you should really enjoy it.

And i have to advise he is kind of understating "hot", think at times potentially utterly disgusting. Now that's not certain, in summer we haven't even turned on our air con for the last 3 years, but holy cow the summer before was studded with 40C + days. Make sure you take decent shade options.

The storms are summer hammers, in the shop at moreton that used to be open they basically sold sand pegs long as your arm for a reason. Again, you might get some you might not, but you may get a serious one so prepare for it with stuff than can be packed and things that won't fly around and your tarp taking off into the scrub where the king browns are.

THe bait is pippies in the sand, and monster worms in the sand, if you can catch them.

Hi,

Just got back camping from Moreton - we are regular travellers there. We usually camp on the bayside and pick Point Cowan about a 5 - 10 minute drive straight up the beach when you get off the barge. Check your tide times when booking the ferry due to often high tides which makes travelling up the beach a no go. The beach is a much better option due to the poor condition of the islands tracks. It has no facilities - we are totally self sufficient and we find if we camp at the sites with no facilities it is not as crowded - we have a camper trailer and as long as the tyre pressure is right you will have no problems - I ran 20psi on from tyres 25 on the back and 35 on the camper trailer. We find the bayside is better for the kids as the weather can get up on the surf side. You will find that at that time of the year that the popular sites such as Blue Lagoon etc will be packed. The petrol station will be closing so you will need to take fuel for generator etc also firewood as it costs a fortune on the island. The island store at Bulwer sells food, milk ice etc but at high prices. Sandflies were also bad and will be worse in January so insect repellent is a must. The ranger told us they would be grading middle road soon so that should make the going a bit better. The sand off the beach to the island tracks chops up with all the traffic so take a snatch strap and good shovel - we pulled three 4WDs out because they stuffed up when travelling off the beach. Not sure what you mean by 'normal camp stuff' but if you have a portable toilet and shower you camping options improve on Moreton and you can get away from the more crowded spots.

Happy to answer any more specific questions if you have them.

Cheers,

Happy Camper Trailers
