We have a dual cab ute with aluminum tray. We have made a frame as high as the cabin of the ute to go on the tray and put a canvas cover over it that ties to tray side with elastic straps.
The frame opens on 3 sides of the frame
What I would like is some ideas people might have to utalise the space we have in the tray to store stuff. We use the opening on the passenger side for the everyday things we need to get. Has anyone made or seen some great strorage ideas that you are able to share please.

Julie,

when I had my ute and canopy, I found the most functional peice of equipment to be a fishing rod holder like those that mount on the bullbar. Instead, I mounted inside the canopy to the roof, and utilised it for storage of shovel, sandflag, winch handle etc.

Not surprisingly Julie, I would suggest some Drawers LOL.

We can do any shape or size without breaking the bank.

Cheers,

Jim.

Julie, you have so far decided to go light weight and one of the best things I have seen to keep the weight down is using a shelf or two of the heavier aluminium security mesh as the base material. It is strong and can be reinforced.

Drawers can be of light material too if you have them, plastic or aluminium. Plastic tubs seem to work for a while in combination with the shelves I suggest above.

Don't want to steal Jims thunder .... but

If your after simplicity and practicality you could have a look at this:

http://sketchup.google.com/3dwarehouse/details?mid=5c536f406685be4a27c36e8e24761b2c&prevstart=0

Saw it years ago in a SWB 4x4 and have been using the same method ever since.

Now have a collection of timber modules for different trip applications e.g. Larger food storage, Fossicking or fishing trips etc ..... Doesnt matter what selection of containers get taken ... they all take up the same overall floorspace when ratchet strapped down. Saves all the worry about what has to be packed where.

Bunnings also have a 600x450x three different height "kitab" brand containers that are excellent if your are leaning towards plastic tubs.

Hi Julie,
It really depends on how you are planning to travel and personal preference. In that sort of space I would probably look at a false floor with no sides. I assume you have tray sides to keep thinks in. You can slide in recovery gear, tools, chairs etc and be able to get them out easily when needed but are generally out of the way. I would probably try nulli (?sp) bins on top of that. They have lids so keep some of the dust out and stack well. If you have a fridge it just replaces a nulli bin stack. One idea I have seen was a pull out table. This was on a tray top camper, but could easily be adapted to your set up, it just slid between two supports at the back and was basically sealed when pushed in. It didn't get dusty and you pulled it out and it had a drop down adjustable leg. Very handy if you pull over for a cuppa or lunch. We have a rule that you nedd to be able to set up camp in 10 minutes or less if required and you need to be able to access regularly used items easily and quickly without a 2 hour repack to get them back in. If you are going to sit somewhere for a week or two then it is not such an issue.
