Birdie
I spent $7600 on a Turbo Kit for a GU 4500 and found out plenty after the first breakdown.
There is a huge variance between the quality of kits out there.
\
Safari use sleeve bearing turbo with small intercooler and add on chip.
AVO has extra large fuel pump, large intercooler, ball bearing Turbo with Link replacement ECU(only $300 more)
Be carefull when shopping, large companies may not offer the quality and support that you expect.

The seventh injector comes in as revs increase, it is in the intake airflow just before the intake manifold.
EFI computer driver module is connected to this injector.
Safari forgot the driver on original install kit, will run lean without this.(as I found out recently, the add on module melted, as this is inside the vehicle, mounted in a plastic-combustible box, could have caused a fire)

Jesus................... $7600
link textoffer bolt on kits WITH intercooler (not fitted) for ---> $5335
They have a good reputation and claim to have every last part (inc washers, nuts, hoses and zip ties) in their kits.
At that price you got charged about $2000 for fitting.

Those CAPA Prices are for Diesel, not the Petrol. They dont even mention a kit for it which is odd.

Oooops, sorry not up with what Patrol engines are what sorry.
But, they have some petrol kits, 2.7 Hilux for eg, but alas no 'kit' for my 2.6 Rodeo :(
Everyone I have talked to wants mega $$$ to do a one off custom installation, I have had guesstimates from $9k - $15k go figure.

I assume you bought the Safari kit then Birdie?
I drove a GU Patrol with the same the same type of kit (Safari) on your Patrol recently and I was very impressed, it was a real torque monster.
Don't forget guy's, Birdy is talking about a petrol (not diesel) turbo installation here and it's much more complicated, particularly integrating it into the engine management system.
Regards Andrew.

Not being stupid, whats the difference?? Wouldnt it just be replace the manifold with the snail on, cross over pipe, plug in chip, or 'flash' the chip, add the 'Zaust and drive away
Why are petrol parts different to Diesel for a Turbo?
I remember you talkin about that car at work one day, the smile made you get a 4.5 for your GQ! :-)~

Bruce (Truckster) if you add the cost of the intercooler probably around $2000 - $2500 at workshop prices and also the unichip which Safari use to integrate into the engine management (a petrol version of their Dtronic if you like) at approx $1500 you've already added $3500 to $4000 to the cost of the turbo kit so that's why the prices seem so high.
Birdy is talking about running an extra 7th injector which in my view is a bit crude. The 4.5 turbo one I drove used larger injectors from the Godzilla Skyline which were probably a bit over the top, and this install was done by Nizpro and the price he was charged was Waaaaaay over what Birdie paid. (So don't feel so bad Birdie)
I'd be very curious to know just how much AVO charge for their installed turbo kit, particularly as their using roller bearing turbo's.
Regards Andrew.

I have to agree, apart from some minor differences (playing with the computer a bit more etc) what is the big difference?
(modern) petrols are fuel injected combustion engines, so are diesels. Fuel metering is handled by that afore mentioned computer so that can't be too big a deal. Exhausts & manifolds are common items in both installations.h
Surely 90% of the components would be common (or not significantly different) in either installation?
Why the price hike? Is it just because they can?

I guess the security of having a specialist install, tune and guarrantee the install is worth thousands of dollars, the engine is 220kw and great to drive, however, my point re the better value of the AVO kit is also valid.
Also, you are correct, very few Companies make a kit for the 4500 engine and they can charge what they like.
Be careful though, I have now discovered that the safari kit sold by Safari Direct is NOT certified for Australia. Same for many Toyota kits available. I have paid good $$$ for this Turbo kit. I was not told.
I am not sure what this means yet, will let you know.
Has any one installed a Turbo kit and does it come with an Owners Manual? Not just an install guide. Even second hand cars must be sold with an owners manual.

The EFI engine is complex, as Andrew said, Oxy sensor, ECU, Throttle position sensor, Airflow sensor, knock sensor, crank position sensor and many more devices that have to interreact for clean burn.
Very expensive to replace an engine

Basically;
Diesels run lean w/o a problem (apart from power loss). They only have a problem when over fuelled (not likely with a std fuel system. Actually you are likely to be disappointed if you JUST add a turbo to a diesel and dont adjust fuel.
On a Petrol lean will punch holes in the piston (specially under high load & boost). You get this without adding additional fuel (since you are now about 50% outside the std engine power settings). The extra injector (or larger replacement injetcors with modified ECU) addresses this by the add-on ECU.
Yes 4.5L petrol goes WELL for a 4wd, both in performacne & fuel consumption, PARTICULALRY if you can get close to 20PSI (on LPG).
