Hi All,
I was looking for some advice on North Stradbroke Island as we have never been ther before and would like to stay in a caravan park / camping ground with powered sites as I would like to tow my 14ft Windsor rapid onto the island. I don't really want to tow through sand and was told that you could drive from the ferry onto a sealed/dirt road. There will be a group of about 20 which will require about 5 sites to stay in the October school holidays 2009. Any advice/recommendations on camping grounds and any pit falls about the island would be gratefully appreciated. We are all keen fisherman and do not know what the island has to offer as we have only camped on Fraser. Thanks for taking the time to read this I look forward to your responses. JB

feries Clink on the camping link to find out about booking etc and there is a phone number to ring . It costs $35 for a twelve month beach permit and you can get them from a few diffrent places . I would stay at amity camping grounds and drive to the beaches as they are not far away . I have been going to straddie for over 40 years .

Amity Point has powered sites and a beautiful outlook. You are right, the roads are all bitumen.

If you want to fish the ocean side, best to stay near point lookout. Amity is a bit further, although still not far away and might be a bit quieter.

thanks for the laugh JB,
i'm just laughing cause there's been bitumin roads on straddie since i was a kid, i'm now in my late 30's. i realise you've never been there before so had no idea what was there, i just found it amusing was all.
the place is nothing like fraser mate, haven't been there for about 15 years so don't know what it's like these days, i just know there's alot of million dollar houses there that never used to be there when i last ventured onto that island.
most of the times i've seen straddie on the news it has been to do with drunken teenagers camping over there during holiday times. police have started cracking down on it the last 2 years now, so you probably need some local advice as to what it's like to stay there at that time of year.

We go to Straddie at least 5 times a year and you will have a ball. We always camp over at main beach but we are self sufficient and don't need site power or amenities. My recommendation will be to try and get over to main beach. There's allot less people there and you get the feeling that you are well away from the crowds

I was just thinking that Troopyman and I also need power as we have already done our share of free camping (left van at home ) down south last holidays and the Boss wants a bit of luxury but thank you all the same for your input Troll and I will be sure to go visit that spot.

Kind Regards J,B.

I would think Adder Rock C/Park would be a great spot for you guys.... central to everything there and reachable via bitumen! Amity Point would be a second choice.
Once you've set up the van/s.... you'll be able to drive all over the island... most of the inland tracks are shut now, but the there is a still a lot of fun driving to do.

Remember tyre pressures are the key!!! We were there last month and the amount of recoveries we did for people who still had 40 psi in the tyres absolutely astounded me!

Cheers

Brian

Depends what you want. If you want surf, and a bit of a commercial precinct with some shops, nice pub, takeaways etc then go to Adder Rock or Cylinder Beach at Pt Lookout. If you want a sleepy, laid back lifestyle then go to Amity Point. Amity is on the western (bay side) of the island and during school holidays might be a bit quieter than Pt. Lookout (it's arguably more family friendly). I've been camping at Amity for 20 years (from when I was a very young child) and only the last 12 months have started camping on the beach at Flinders (the beach between Amity and Pt Lookout).

Amity has great fishing off the shore into calm waters, Pt Lookout has great fishing off the rocks into Surf, and there's good fishing all along the surf beaches as well.

You'll have an awesome time at Straddie! Check out the Fishermans Club at Amity for a great feed, the Keyholes and Brown Lake for a fresh water swim and it's definitely worth having a look at Main Beach. Do the Gorge walk too - great scenery out over the Pacific Ocean and on a clear day you can see Cape Moreton. Keep in mind though that there's now fines payable if you're caught driving on the beach within an hour either side of high tide. A beach permit is about $35 for 12 months from memory.

it's not really critical mate - Amity or Adder Rock - can't go wrong with either because it's not far to anywhere, although Adder is more central
