Hi all,
i no i not talking about 4by's, but i just wanted to share about how impressed i am with the new diesel's. If somebody had said last week that i would have a little car on diesel & a Ford to top it off i would have laughed at them,,,, but here i am wanting to say how impressed i was with this car. 2 days ago we took ownership of a 2007 (11 months old) Ford Focus 2.0l turbo diesel. The stats show to be 5.6l per 100km (WOW!!!). Now i wanted to trade our V6 Camry Intrigue in for a newer V6 Sportivo, but after being talked into test driving this car from my wife, i gotta say this car was more than impressive. 320nm of torque on a smaller car & 5.6l per 100km . I just couldn't believe how much go this car has. The decider was mainly the fact that we can almost halve the fuel cost as we both do a lot of k's per week (shiftworkers). And now 2 diesels in the house yeeeeehaaaa.. Image Could Not Be FoundImage Could Not Be Found

We have had a number of diesel cars overseas for rental They have been great. One striking one I can remember was a Rover, 90 mph in Ireland and accelerating uphill like a train. Citroen people mover too was fantastic for two weeks at up around 130-140kph too. Had an electrical problem in a Pug though.

John,

My parents hired a 1.9L Rover Diesel in England as well.

The Old Man raved about it. It would easily sit on 100 mph on the Motorway, and like you, he found it just ate the hills.

Jim.

That would be the one Jim. Ireland didn't have the roads to do the ton where I was driving. LOL Much better than the car I had ordered.

My how times have changed.
We hired an Astra hatchback in Spain in 2002. It was the week before the motorcycle grand prix and every body was on the freeways. At times we were over 160kph and bikes were overtaking like we were standing still. The Astra performed well above expectations and with exceptional economy. When we returned home I went straight to my local GMH dealer to trade my VPSS commodore in (the most unreliable car I have ever had). The salesman said we don't have them because there is no market for them. I wrote to GMH to ask if there we plans to import the Astra. A couple of weeks passed and they replied by mail. Australians are not ready for DIESEL ENGINED cars and there are no plans to import them. I went straight to Lismore Peugeot and traded on a 406 HDI ! We have never been happier. Service every 20,000 km. never needed a spare part, burnt out the first set of tyres at 68,000 km. and between Coffs Harbour and Brisbane returns 5.2 lhk. It even has the original battery .
Living is a journey,it depends on where you go !

Ford have been a little slow getting diesel sedans into Oz. I hired one from a rent-a-wreck establishment in 1997.

We bought a VW Jetta with the 2L TDI over a year ago. We get an average of 5.5L/100k for mostly around town driving. The consumption is slightly worse if my wife has been doing most of the driving as she tends to stick the boot in.

Goes like the clappers. My only complaint is that the turbo tends to kick in very suddenly. Apparently the recent ones have changed the mapping so it comes in more smoothly. Great car. The European diesel cars are way ahead of everyone else and have been for many years with their low sulphur fuel.

Alastair,

We have a Golf with the 2.0L TDI and my ONLY complaint with the car is the initial lag getting off the mark. Once the turbo spools up it goes like the clappers, but you need to get used to the first second or so before it does. Has given me a few surprise moments threading through the small gap at busy intersections. Maybe VW over corrected a little too much?

The six speed DSG box is an absolute delight, just hope I still don't own the car when it breaks ($$$$). Takes a while to get used to the diesel, very deceptive in terms of speed. Doesn't feel like it is doing much until you look at the speedo. Whoops.

I will be interested to have a drive of the 1.4L TSI. Seems to be a concept that offers the best of both worlds. Supercharger for low down power then a turbo once the revs get up. A 1.4L petrol putting out 170Hp. Not bad.

Matt.
