Have taken off all pipes to intercooler and found what I call a lot of oil in them.My question is can oil get there any other way than via the turbo?

Dont know the Nissan set up but most turbo set ups have the engine breather system piped into the inlet pipe to the turbo. So you get any oil pressurised/sucked out the breather into the turbo and then through the I/C pipes.Thats why alot of high preformance vehicles use catch cans to stop the oil getting back into the turbo.
It can also enter through the turbo as you mentioned.

Have a read of ThreadID: 27595. Process of elimination might be worth starting from your turbo and/or intercooler...

How much is a lot. I know mine always had a sign of oil on the Intercooler fins and after the "Rebuild" I had an oil leak which was traced to a split intercooler, which Nissan replaced free thank you, so there must be oil present in the system.

I would say the best part of 30ml out of all the hoses, pulled the air cleaner out no change, pulled the engine breather off fumes but no oil, took the tube from the turbo to intercooler off and did get oil coming out. The only thing I can't understand why it runs so rough.

Dont know. Probably not a great deal of oil considering the rough running. With mine it ran fine most of the time. When it 'let go" I was about 7kms from home, came to and intersection where I had to give way, took off in 1st, turned right, straightened up into 2nd and bang rattle rattle rattle. No sign it was going to happen but unlike yours, I had heaps of oil throughout the engine bay. Thought I'd put a piston out through the block there was so much oil and I do remember the burnt oil smell but that was probably the oil on the outside of the warm engine block. I hope yours is not as sever as mine. If you trust your dealer then that'd be the place to start. If you dont you'll need a good diesel mechanic and then see what your options are. I know it is disheartening and all consuming but there can and will be worse things that'll happen in life so try and keep it in perspective, something that I struggled with in the beginning.

And actually when the intercooler was diagnosed with a split and that was the cause of the oil leak, I asked a question on this forum about how much oil goes into the intercooler and got some good responses and a bit of tech talk. Do a search and you may find it. It would have been about Feb/March 2006 i think.

It is quite normal to see some oil in there. It mainly comes from the PCV breather as someone else has mentioned and it will be more if the engine is overfilled with engine oil as the oil separator in the rocker cover struggles.
If the turbo bearings are shot, you will see lots of blue smoke when the engine is running and rather a lot more oil in those hoses.
