We are heading down to
Canberra (from
Gold Coast) soon and planning our trip. Two
camp grounds near
Macksville listed in Camps Australia look good.
Gumma Reserve 7.5 KM E of
MacksvilleThe Pines Picnic Area, Way Way
State Forest.
But both are listed as having narrow access roads. We will be towing our new Kedron caravan.
Way Way seems to be the more difficult one (small vehicles only due to narrow road) so it might be unsuitable. Gumma Reserve says 'fairly large area beside Warrell Creek, but narrow access.
Anyone familiar with these
places and will we get into either with the van?

Norm,
The roads into
The Pines Picnic Area in Way Way
State Forest are OK.
Depending on the way you are going to get in there the roads can be a bit narrow but you certainly wont have a problem with the Kedron.
The Pines is very shady but the sites to
camp are very limited. Its more a picnic spot than a camping spot in my opinion.
I havent actually been to Gumma but my mate who lives at
Valla Beach has a few times and reckons its OK as
well.
Are you specifically after a freebie spot or not, because there are some nice caravan parks in the area like
Grassy Head or
Scotts Head or Riverside CVP and North Shore CVP at
Mylestom, that aren't that expensive or come a little bit further south and try
Kylies Beach or
Diamond Head in the Crowdy Bay NP, or
Point Plomer south of Crescent Head.
Cheers,
Cruiser

Thanks for the info guys.
We are after 'free camps' which is what we prefer. I use the term '
free camp' not to indicate the price (don't mind paying a small fee such as in National Parks). But we do prefer the '
bush camping' type spots to caravn parks.
Gumma Reserve looks like a nice spot for an overnighter and to
check it out for a future longer term stay with the boat.
Thanks again.

Norm,
Have stayed overnight a Gumma and never been asked for a fee, so I have no idea of the cost but am led to believe it is very reasonable.
Good flathead fishing in Warrell Creek, which to me is more a river than a creek. For someone with a boat there are many kilometres of waterway available. We have had some good Austalian Bass fishing
well up the creek.
