Cape York

Why does everyone travel to the Cape in May/June/July? Realise temps increase later but seems to have a comfortable max around 30 degrees in Sept/Oct We are thinking of going Sept/Oct next year. Can anyone tell me why this would not be a good idea?

Have travelled there quite comfortably in Sept/Oct.
But the Wet season build-up hadn't started.
Here are a few reasons why people go sooner.
It's not too hot or muggy.
Everything is open (especially the roads/tracks).
The tracks haven't been cut up by the invading tourists yet
The Cape isn't yet burning from lightning strikes.
You can be pretty sure that you can re cross the rivers /creeks.
There are enough people around so that if you do get into strife, you won't need to wait too long before someone comes along and asks you to get your vehicle out of their way.

Yep. What Footy Said - all true. Depending on how the wet season is, is when you can get in. I have been up in March inspecting Roads for flood damage and able to get through (plenty of 1m deep river crossing though), then some years you will not get all the way until late May. I have been caught and stuck in places for a couple of days by Pre wet season storms in mid October, and its no fun at night when they are building, very humid. Thats why most do it during the dry season. Much more plesant with little risk of being stuck. In saying that we got stuck for a week in Iron range in August last year from unseasonal rain, so it can happen and will happen again. Cheers Tony

PS Look at the BOM site link http://mirror.bom.gov.au/products/IDR192.loop.shtml#image

Look at the rain over inland areas now around Palmer River then use the arrows to look at the cape. Also useful if you want to plan a future trip watch the radar for the month you intend to go in the future. Chow Tony
