Westcoast
Gudday.
So my Dad is coming over from the UK for Christmas. I haven't seen him in ten years, but he's lived in Australia for decades before that and is really looking forward to coming out. I have to drive from
Perth to
Darwin and we're planning on spending Christmas day out on the road, either
camping or in cheapish accommodation.
Any suggestions between
Perth and
Exmouth? It'd be good to be able to light a fire for a
camp oven roast but not essential. I found
Wagoe Beach near
Kalbarri, you can book chalets there pretty cheaply but I've heard it's really windy and not too pleasant there over summer. What about
Shark Bay?
I know it'll probably be hot wherever, but we'll be heading that way anyway...

At that time of the year, around X-mas, you need to take the following into consideration if travelling by car.
1. Temperatures around 40c
2. Extremely high humidity
3. In the middle of the cyclone season
4. In the middle of the wet season, i.e. Roads blocked, Floodways.
Considering your dad is comming from a winter climate, he may not appreciate our weather at that time of the year.
Most areas will have a total fire ban in place, therefore no
camp fires.
Wagoe is very basic, mainly suits fishermen, could also be booked out at that time of the year.
Hope I have not disappointed you too much
Cheers

Hey Phil,
Cannot remember as we were coming out of
steep point with my cousin and his mates after a massive drinking session and we had to stop there to let the alcohol leave our bodies.
But by memory you turn to head to
steep point and somewhere along that road there is a station on the left where u have to get a key.
from there u head back to the
steep point road turning right (back towards the
shark bay road) about 200mtrs down the road you turn left through the
locked gate and drive approx 15 mins. You come to the bay and find a
camp or go to the huts.........
I might have to go back and get proper directions again as it was so nice.

The place extfilm is talking about is probably
Tamala station on the way to
Steep Point--a nice spot but a long way of the main drag.Iwould consider 40 mile beach where you would have a big choice of campsites at that time of year and you could have your campfire and it is only 5 mins off the main drag.By the way the turnof is about 60km sout of Karatha.

That's a great suggestion, thanks. I'm starting to think that a bit further south might be better so that we can spend some time in
Shark Bay on the way up, but this suggestion might just be a go-er...

Hi Westcoast, 40 mile is a great place but it hasn't got a stick of shade. It is already 39 degrees up here. By Christmas it will be about 45 (41 in the shade).I think dad might struggle with the heat. doc.

Tamala is a nice spot out of
shark bay if you have a small boat - stayed and fished there for a week or so some years back with Starlo, & others, had agreat time but it was August so the
water was alittle chilly (but not for a pom!) ;o)
Also - if you want a little more sophisticated - then stay at Nanga station - they have showers and huts or tent sites as
well as
shop etc
They have large communal outdoor shelters (somewhere to get out of the sun and wind) and have various sheep on the spit nights and a
camp oven night where you can get a feed and a cold beer etc for reasonable costs - might make a nice communal christmas night stop over if you don't actually base yourself there.
The deep fried snapper wings from the restaurant are to die for!
Sage swimming beach -lots to see and do from a tourist perspective around
Denham including a new multi million $ martime museaum thats fully air conditioned and would take 2 full days to explore properly also the Ocean
park aquarium place was Ok too.
Shark Bay would be my pick for the Xmas stop over.
Tamala if you want to rough it(you have to book
well ahead) or nanga if you want a few creature comforts in a wild location, and some good company and food / drinks for Xmas.
Even the foreshore in
denham has nice grass areas and shade shelters/ BBQ's etc right on
the beach..
Sheesh - I better stop its making me wanna go there again!
Cheers

Hi Westcoast, If you are going to stay at
Shark bay and end up going to
Monkey Mia - see if you can get onto the tour of the oyster farm there. Very cheap and an incredibly interesting tour. We found it more entertaining than the dolphins. Cheers. doc.
