Hi All,

I am currently on teaching rounds and the class [grade 4] I'm with are looking at Australian History - primarily Australian explorers, the kids are doing projects on different explorers, and one boy has decided to look at the life of Len Beadell.

He is having trouble finding about Len's early life does anyone know anything about his childhood - where he went to school etc.

Anything would be great.

He does have some copies of a couple of Len's books, but really needs some early info.

cheers in advance

Lyn

Lyn,

There's also a biography available through the ABC Shop. Details are:

A Lifetime In The Bush: A biography of Len Beadell by Mark Shephard

This may have more info on his early years than his own books.

Lyn,

I have found this site good for Australian Explorers.

It does not have Len Beadell but it might help with future reference

Hi Lyn
Like above, the most detailed information of Lens Life was written by Mark Shephard in the book called a "Lifetime in the Bush" It is a very informative book, and gives a complete run down on Lens life, from when his Grandparents left England in the Mid 1870's to his childhood and his Scout Leader, John Richmond who was his mentor in leaning the trade of Surveying.
This is a great read and a must have book for any person who has followed Our Last True Explorer.

Cheers

Stephen

Leonard (Len) Beadell OAM BEM FIEMS (b. West Pennant Hills, New South Wales 1923 - May 12, 1995) was a surveyor, roadbuilder (some 6500km), bushman, and author, responsible for opening up the last remaining isolated desert areas (some 2.5 million square kilometers) of central Australia in the 1940s and 1950s. Len is sometimes called "the last true Australian explorer".

Len Beadell was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1958 for his work constructing the Gunbarrel Highway. He was awarded the Order of Australia medal in 1988 in the Queen's Birthday honours list.

He was a Fellow of the Institution of Engineering and Mining Surveyors, Australia, hence his postnominal, FIEMS (Aust.).

He also has an asteroid named after him, an honour bestowed because his roads led to the discovery of several important meteorites in the Australian outback.
