Frankly, at the cost they can be bought for, I doubt that renting is viable.

I recently snagged one on EBay for a bit over $500. It is surprisingly good quality, canvas is good, it has a fly. The mattress is just OK, could do with some "egg shells".

I've had it to bits to make it suit the application it was bought for and it is very well made.

Cheers,

Jim.

There is a guy on ebay selling roof top tents that are manufactured in South Africa for around $650. He even uses the same pictures that "open sky" do on their website but has taken the texta to it to blank out their name!

no not off hand but have you considered an alumunim offroad camper trailer which weighs from 450kg. They are light weight with heaps of room for the family. Take a look at www.itsallgoodoffroad.com.au and see if they would be suitable for you. They have heaps of storage space for all the kids stuff. Terry

Been there. We had a off road unit years ago, got sick of the stuff we shuffled around. We tow a caravan now and will be in it full time next Sept for a couple of years. For the real camping we have a tent on the ground. Heading off to the cape in July 09 and dont want to share the ground with those prehistoric dogs I just wont sleep.
Thanks all for your response and thoughts. All great points, Think might have to purchase one.

There was a company that did it for a while here in Hervey Bay, but found that it just wasn't worth their time.

They needed such a range of roof racks and bars, and with the variety of vehicle heights their tents were getting damaged by the annex either being stretched, or being just bundled loosely on the ground.

So judging from their experience, I don't know if anyone would do it, (or if they do, they probably won't have any sort of annex - which may suit you anyway).

cheers Dave
