Hi all,
well its time the 100 series gets upgraded. its a 2001 standard wagon, 4.5 diesel. but my question is... to get the best return.. do I...
A. Strip as many of the after market accessories off as I can, and sell them individually. ( I estimated nearly $20,000 worth, of which some cannot be removed - i.e.
snorkel, turbo, diff locks) ?
B. Sell as is, with everything still attached?
C. See how insulted I would be by a trade in value, with no accessories,
D. See how insulted I would be by a trade in value with all accessories left on?
What are your thoughts.. ???
Thanks,
Jarrod.

Hi Jarrod,
Been there, done that! My advice is to strip and sell separately. Unlikely to get a cent extra for all your accessories if left fitted and you may even get less because of them!!! I know, makes no sense but what I have found in my experience. At least if you strip what you can, you will make some money when you sell them.
As a guide, I got offered no more for my GU when fitted with all my accessories, yet sold what I could strip for ~$4,000 - about a 1/2 - 1/3 of their new price.
Cheers
Captain

Yep strip as much as you can.....for instance when I traded my GU they wanted the _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx out and seats put back in ect.
I made over $1000 on just 2 items which I removed and the yard didn't care either way.
Strip away :)

OR
advertise the cruiser here for what you would like to get for it minus 2k, and take the cash to the dealer and say.....cash sale 2k off purchase price...then U have a good deal and someone else gets one too...
An accessorised cruiser is worth a bit to someone looking for such a beast, will sell quicker with accessories, but yes, if you want to trade, rip it appart.

If you are not in a hurry to sell, lave them on and advertise in the right
places.
There is a market for a kitted up Cruiser/Patrol, it is a smaller market, but it is there.
We are making the move to a 'yota sooner rather than later, and I'm not planning to strip the Pootrol. I'll advertise appropriately and sell privately.
But then, i won't be in a rush!

Tend to agree P7 , one of the reasons I haven't upgraded is the work that has gone into making the car what it is and the effort required to get a new one to the same level.
Simple things like installing a UHF properly can take a long time.
But it has to be the right market , else as per when I sold my Gq the car yard didn't care anything about accessories and just wanted it standard as possible.

Having recently gone through the same exercise;
a. DON'T go to a dealer to ask about trade in - you will be insulted.
b. Sell in the right market as is (per P7Offroad) - the time and effort you take in removing the accessories ansd selling them is better spent doing the things you enjoy more (never did like haggling with buyers)
c. You should seek more than $2000 off the asking price in a retail yard if your new purchase is over $20K, they are sure to have at least 10% in their markup.
Cheers and good luck
P.S - I think you meant 4.2L Diesel

Agree... Sell your car privately if you have the time and then buy your new car without trade in.... car yards will always drop the price if you don't have a trade anyway so you will be ahead there to start with..
Selling accessories can be worth it but you have to put the elbow grease into putting your car back together again without them and it is often more pain than gain..
Best of luck.

Yes
I am in the same boat.
I am hoping that this is an "appropriate market" as I know whoever buys it will be a happy camper.
See the 1999 100 series listing I just added to the Trader List for a great honest vehicle with all of what you will need.

Just went through the same exercise with my 2001 STD wagon with 195000km on it. I took some of the smaller things off (
driving lights, rood console) and left the
suspension, winch, bulbar, turbo etc on and got $24000 for it.
I then went to the Toyota yard and picked up a new 200 series GXL twin turbo diesel for $66000 driveaway no trade that they had in the yard at the time. Also got floor mats, roof racks, window tint, tow kit, headlight protectors thrown in. And to make things even better it was the colour I wanted.
If I had of traded the 100 series in I would have got 18-20k and then had to pay list price of around 76k for the 200 series. So the way I look at it I am at least 14k in front
The secret is to know what you are after, the price of that vehicle and then go to the dealer and say you will buy one today, name your price and then negotiate from there. Never pay list price.
Don't be scared to walk away and go to the next dealer.

I stipped my Prado before I sold it and then as I sold the items one by one I used the money to purchase off the wish list slowly the items I wanted. I also adapted the rear _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx to fit in the cruiser as
well. It took a bit and I had to make new side sections but it saved me heaps so
well worth stripping it and selling.

Thanks to all who replied, (oh, and yes, she is a 4.2L !! - oops!)
Its only got 90,000K on the clock, and as I've said, over $20,000 spent on upgrades/accessories. I would MUCH prefer to see an enthusiast use this truck for what is was intended, and set up for.
time to polish her up, write up the list and head over to the trader section!!
Thanks again guys, good honest advice.
Jarrod.
