Hi
I have watched your forums for many years - and now just become a visitor in need of some advice if possible.

We (from Melb) have just completed the Gibb River Road and Bungle Bungles (and now in Derby) - I have a basket on the roof with an extra spare tyre.

I am now in Derby and noticed that my roof rails have come loose. Eg - I can lift the middle and rear mounting out of its place on the roof.
It looks like the nuts may have come loose from the retaining bolts -from the corrugated roads ?

Any suggestions on how this can be fixed ? Can it be done externally - or does the roof lining need to be removed ?

Thanks for any suggestions
Best regards JR

John, it may help to know what the roof rails are on - the car I mean. Jeepney, Disco, Exploder?

I had the rails and basket on my Navara. I thought the used a locking-self tapping screw or rivet of some description so they didn't have to do anything under the roof lining. It also kept the fastener head flat so it didn't impede the ability of the foot to slide up and down the rail. It would help to know how the rails appear to be fastened. Have you thought of giving a supplier like ARB in Perth or a 4x4 place in Broome or Karatha a ring. If it's a rivet situation, you'll only have to replace the broken pin or re-drill and use a slightly larger rivet.

Good luck.

Mick.

(Have you been keeping an eye on the screw tightness in the clamps on the feet? If they come loose a fraction of a millimetre, the vibration will cause the problem you have. I used to check mine every day on those rough roads. M)

John
I am guessing you are driving a new VW Touareg. If so this has to be a warranty issue. Why not just ring the dealer and throw it in his lap?
