Hi all,
Can anyone tell me whether it affects the life of the batteries if I connect cranking batteries to deep cycle batteries in a dual battery set up (via red arc solenoid) or should I keep both batteries consistent?
I am thinking of buying a red top battery as the start battery and a yellow top battery to run accessories as the aux. battery
I imagine everyone does this and is not as issue.

Thanks in advance

Brett

Can't see a problem with that set up.. the solenoid keeps the batteries isolated from one another until you go to crank the motor when the two are linked... this won't upset the deep cell as the main battery will do the cranking anyway...

As I understand the workings of a Redarc isolator it keeps the batteries separate until the crank battery reaches a certain voltage and then links them to charge the second battery.

If you want to link them together for starting you either put the push button on the dash and hold it in to link them or put a relay in the start circuit to automatically do it as I have done.

It works for me as I have two identical Hybrid batteries.

Was going to get Optimas for the van but as the ones I saw were only 50ah decided to get 100ah AGM's

Were also a $100 cheaper each.

In an ideal situation any batteries connected together should be of the same size, age & construction in order to maximise life & ensure a full charge.
In reality the vast number of people mix & match batteries of all types & ages with varying degrees of success & is impossible to quantify how those 2 would last in your specific application. I have mixed wet cell deep cycle & starting batts for years & got 3 to 4 years max out of them.
