Unichip

Hi,

For those who own the petrol hungry Land Rover V8's, I recently had a "Unichip" fitted to our 1997 Discovery SE7 V8, with some interesting results. On the four wheel dyno, the power at the wheels went up to 90.5Kw (from 60 odd) and the torque 208Kw @ 3,500 rpm. The max power Band is now in between 3,000 and 4,000rpm.

I had it fitted prior to going on a 21 Caravan Tag-a-long tour, which finished at Casino, last month.

The difference in towing a caravan was truly amazing. The Disco was more responsive, had a hell of a lot more power and the fuel consumption was better.

On the way from Brisbane to Roma, I had strong head winds all the way. We sat on 90kph and got only 24.5 L/100km. However, 18.9 to 19.6 was the normal consumption, also at 90 to 95 kph.

Prior to the chip, this vehicle did 22 to 25 around town and 14.3, on the highway at 100kph.

A couple of days ago, I did a trip from Brisbane to Cooroy and return, sitting on 115kph, followed by another 100km on local travel. When I filled the tank, the Disco had averaged 15.3 L/100km, combined. Around town it is doing 18 to 20, depending on the traffic.

So if anyone wants to convert their "V8 slug" into a "real V8", that is the way to do it.
I don't have LPG so I have two fuel maps, one for ULP and one for PULP. I have not tried the latter, as yet. But I can say I'm really happy with the chipped motor. It was well worth the 1600 bucks :)

Cheers,
Ron

Hi Andrew,

The engineering was not the best. The alloy engine has promise, but it is less powerful than a equivalent model Holden V6.

They can be power beasts though, bored and stroked to 5 litres will see a huge difference. Have a look at:

I just find it strange to have a V8 that is soooo gutless, with people needing to bore and stroke the thing to get any life out of it.....shouldn't that be the case in the first place? :-)

Andrew,

When the 3.5 and 3.6 litre V8 was put in the Range Rover, Land Rover and LR Discovery, they were low compression and detuned to run in any country on any available fuel. That way the vehicles could be exported around the world and run on high grade fuel, down to almost Camels P*ss :)

The exception was the USA, where high compression motors were fitted.

It worked and worked well.
The Land Rover group had no idea that the silly Aussies would try and use those vehicles as "tow Mobiles".

Remember, we are talking about the 1980's, carbies, etc, not fuel injection. That came later, but still on the "one for all" concept.

Now days things are totally different.
The latest Land Rover variants have Jaguar V8's, V6's and twin turbo Diesel V6's and a terrific 3.6L V8 twin turbo Diesel, that is gutsy and very economical. The price is high :(

Cheers,
Ron

Damn! That is around $40 for every 100km... I think I will stick with my old, smokey, noisy, bumpy and .. did I say old T/Diesel 80 series which will use around the 12 - 14L/100k (or around $21/100k) mark towing a lightish trailer.
