Moke
Hi,
I saw this post in the archives from August and couldn't see how to add to it or retrieve from the archives.
http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/60677/Re_Cape_York_by_2wd.aspx?ky=moke&p=%2fForum%2fDefault.aspx%3fs%3d1%26ky%3dmoke%26pn%3d1
For Terry C who is considering a trip up the cape in his Moke it can be done, we took three Mokes up in 2006. If you need spares then there is an old rusted Moke in the grass next to the motor wreckers/repairers on the road to the Airport at
Bamaga. The biggest issue was corrugations so make sure your 'donuts' are settled in and
well clear of the bumpstops before you leave and jacking rings in the rear are worth it.
Somebody else mentioned seeing Mokes being floated across the
Jardine. They only floated one across, Missy, which was for a photo in Australasian Post. The guys that did look back at the pictures now and think they were a bit stupid, but lucky.
Someone else mentioned seeing Mokes at
El Questro in july of this year. I was leading them on a trip around, I was the red Moke from Victoria, two others were from Queensland and his and her Mokes were from South Australia. We did Oonadatta, Finke, Uluru, Alice, East MacD's to the
plenty Highway,
Darwin,
Gibb River Road,
Broome,
Marble bar and we separated at Meekathara and some went to
Perth and I came back to work.
And yes there are plenty of mokes still around and we have a MokeFest gathering in Wagga Wagga at
Easter in 2009.

You can not add things to an archived thread. All you can do is to start a new thread and give the old thread ID, ThreadID: 60677 in your case.
I see there some smart types on this thread who do not appreciate Mokes, they probably have not seen one. You should get to the cape OK - after the first car to be driven to the cape was an Austin 7.
For all those who wish to experience Moking there is a hire fleet of Mokes on Magnetic Island. I think they were about $60 a day when I hired one.

Just looked them up see
http://www.mokemagnetic.com/index.html
This bit comes from their site:
Moke Magnetic commenced operations as Magnetic Island Rent-a-Moke approximately 30 years ago. The current owners have had the business since 1986.
With sunshine all year round and the casual, laid-back Island lifestyle, mokes are a perfect way to see the natural beauty and local wildlife of Magnetic Island at your own pace.
The original fleet of vehicles came from Mt Isa mines where they were part of the underground work force. Since then we have accumulated mokes from elsewhere and now have 65 on the fleet.

Hi,
That is an old photo that pops up from time to time. Although not confirmed the pictures is most likely from Vietnam during the war. The French had a few of them over there, some still exist there too, and the one in the picture is from the UK.
The US embassy in Siagon had a yellow one as a run around and there are stories that the Australian used but I haven't seen any proof.
There is also a couple of photos around of 4 Journalist killed in a Moke in Siagon, 2 Australians, 1 Bristish and 1 American. It is pretty graphics so not going to post them here.
Maybe Garbutt is just a closet Moker wanna-be. :)

Hi,
I am glad my post has given you some amusement. Fortunately ExplorOZ is a very good website about traveling in Australia, regardless of the vehicle.
If all you had to talk about was 4wd's, it would be pretty boring site :)
