Well have arrived back safely with 16.5kk
Mildura,Alice,Tanami,Woolfe creek, halls, Kunnannara,Derby, andall places south.highlights being Karigini and the railway track up to Dampier via millstream NP.Then to all the wonderful wildflower destinations-it really is the garden state-in the natural sense
Then down to the great forests and to kal and back home
All of this in a 98 Landrover defender towing a 1980 Hilite caravan which survived the trip in the same condition it left home
just goes to prove if you have old gear don't despair -just drive to the conditions enjoy your lieisurly trip and you won't spend a lot of time in caravan parks waiting for expensive replacement suspension/brake parts for your $40+van HE!HE! Saw quite a bit of that
A tip to remember,so if you've got the inclination ,you don't need heeaps of cash -just get an older better built van and take you timeand enjoy
Mary,
PS Willem the Tanami is rough as guts but my little old van will still be off for many off road jaunts to come-it survived with flying colours

Hi Mary

Good to hear that you had a great holiday and that your van survived the ordeal.

The scenery of the whole of WA is just superb and especially that of the south-western forests.

Cheers

Hi Mary,
Spoke to you at Denmark Visitor Centre, you were talking with the Woodturners at work there.
I was one of the two L/Rover owner-woodturners you spoke to.
Lou had the Defender while mine was the Series 3 by the workshop door.

Glad thet you enjoyed your little excursion around the best part of Oz.
Agree with your thoughts on not needing all the new gear for a successful trip, I reckon that most of the "older" vehicles and caravans are better built than a lot of the spiffy new stuff, and more reliable too.

Keep on travelling happy

Disco.

Well There you Go. We did the calculations and to get into a new vehicle that will take us where the old girl gets us, we would be up for $120k and some.

Great post Mary...No doubt your achievements with your vehicle and caravan after that trip give you a special kind of satisfaction. Good on you for giving it a go. We are going to go to the west from the Hunter Valley NSW in July 2010 for a special Navy re-union, and will try to incorporate either the GCR or the Tanami, or both, on that trip. I would love to do the Tanami either going over, or coming back, as I lived out there in the 1950's at Mt. Doreen Stn which is now abondoned.
Your story gives me great inspiration.Well done and thanks. Hope you are able to post some pics.
Fred
