Just done a trip around the block with Grandtreks keeping pretty much on the black stuff. It is now time to replace them and was told about Mickey Thompson tyres, which I have to admit I had never heard of before. Who out there can tell me of their experience using MT.
Are they a suitable general purpose highway and offroad tyre or should I stick to the Grand treks who have served me
well with 81K

I use the mickey thompson mtz tyres. fantastic mud and off road but realistically if you are mainly black top, you cant go past the toyo open country. they are with out a doubt the best touring tyre i have ever used. the only place they fall down is in really slippery mud in which case any all terrain tyre would most likley have the same problem. i have not used any other in the mickey t range.

I have been very happy with my MTZ's. They have done everything I have asked of them without any damage or wear AT ALL.... in the 4 days and 200kms since I put them on :)
But seriously, I just bought 8 of the suckers for my lap next year. I asked everyone I knew about all things big black and round and the MT's were pretty much the only tyre I didn't hear any bad stories about. Also 2 people that I respect the opinion on such things told me that they were impressed by the MTZ's.
It was a toss up between the BFG's (I've had several sets over the years with no complaints) GY Wrangler MTR's, Mickey T MTZ's and ATZ's. In the end, the MTZ's got it on advice and price. $308.75 each.

We have had a couple of sets of BF Muddies and ask our selves the same question when its time to do the big 6 change over. Not cheap i know but with a few big trips ahead of us we are certainly leaning towards Mickey's. Noticed our current set of BF have splits down the side wall. Half of them have dog turds inserted. We run them between 32 to 35.

Hi there Avan,
I too was thinking of the MTZ's for the past 6 months, & after talking myself into the BF's & then into the Goodyears, i finally went back to the Mickeys, but in the ATZ's (4 rib design), & i gotta say so far...... I LOVE EM !!!! Too soon to say how they are wearing(only about 2000k's), but for noise on the black; pretty good, use on sand; BLOODY GREAT, bit of mud; !#$%# FANTASTIC. In real life they are a little more aggressive than on their website, but that was a bonus for me really. I don't know how they would fair on coarse gravel roads as i babyed
mine a little ( i had to drive some really coarse stuff within 50km's of leaving the tyre
shop). Good luck with whatever you decide..

I run the MTZ's and I will buy them again and again but if you are only doing black stuff get something else these tyres are designed for the rough

Avan - whilst there is as big list of tyres on the market - if you can obtain 81k out of a set of Grandtreks why change. Your driving technique and road surface of which you travel suits the tyre.
I often read and people advise that I should be running this brand and that one, but I also get great wear from Grandtreks - why change.
A J
