Hi all,
meanwhile is our next tour to Australia in planning. Is there anybody out there who can tell me where the biggest open cut coal mine in Victoria is and is there somewhere a lookout for an impressive overview?
We are also interested in a guided open cut coal mine tour. Which is the best place and can you advise a tour company, too?

Thanks and best regards
Helga

Helga, the biggest would be in the Latrobe Valley, about an hour and a half East of Melbourne. Good look out just of the highway at Yallourn of the Western fields, there are tours of the mine and power station at Morwell, look for the Powerworks signs. There is also an old dredger to look at near the entrance to Powerworks, so you shouldn't miss the turn. Hope this helps?

you have 4 major fields Yallourn Morwell Hazelwood and Loy Yang 1&2 all have opencuts although morwell coal comes from yallourn and all have good viewing platforms and you can do tours
1 of my favourite views is from just off the highway on a foggy morning with just the cooling towers above the fog line

Steve,
thank you for your reply. You have aroused my interest. Have you GPS coordinates from your favourite lookout for me, please?

One of the best tours we've done is the free one of the Leigh Creek coalmine in SA.

John L,
yeah, Leigh Creek coal mine is a great spot and it was on our holiday list last year on the way up to Innamincka, Birdsville, Lawn Hill... But do you know The Super Pit (gold mine) in Kalgoorlie? This hole is simply fantastic and even more the huge machinery.

Cheers
