The fuel prices paid at the pump by Australian motorists seem to have taken a second place in the news recently because of the Economic Meltdown.

The price of a barrel of crude as given on the TV appears to have fallen from a high of $140 a month ago to the current $80. If this continues would it be reasonable to expect that bowser prices should halve or at least significantly drop from a recent high of $1.60 for ULP?

This would help all Australians, including travellers and those away from the Cities in these tight times and we should do our best to remain vigilant and ensure that price reductions are passed on to the consumers and not disappear.

Well on the news last night there was a organisation sticking it to the fuel companies saying they are ripping the people off by at least 20 cents a litre and something needs to be done about it.

Me I think its more like 40 cents a litre.

It would appear the only companies not experiencing economic meltdown are the oil companies.
Last night on the news it stated that Aust motorists were being overcharged 20c a litre on fuel.
Lets hope that the Aust dollar doesn't fall any lower.
Cheers.

Don't forget the fall in value of the Aussie dollar in your calculations. We were up around $0.98 US at one stage now we're a lot lower $0.68US or so.

Somwhere, I think it was this forum about a week ago but can't find it now someone had checked out Clatex's web site.

in 2005 Oil was $70 - 75 a liter. The AUD was about 72 cents. Petrol for most of the year was $1.05 to $1.20.

Now we are at about $75 a barrel and 70 cents and Petrol is $1.55

Based on the 2005 figures it should be about $1.25 - $1.30/L

The point was made that wage rises since 2005 werent factored in but still that leaves a huge gap. I know my wages haven't made that much headway.
