FYI - for those on the road long term

Telstra and Bigpond are changing NextG plans to "unlimited" aka "Liberty" plans - You have to login to your telstra/bigpond control panel and change the plan:

$89.95 BigPond Liberty 5GB
$129.95 BigPond Liberty 10GB

After you hit the limit you are limited to 64k (about 1.25x dialup speed)

Telstra will change as well soon.

$90/mth for 5Gb + using PennyTel ANI callback for 39c per call on mobile is a good combo on the Road (for me anyway)

Excellent news. Exceeding the download limit on a fast nextg connection has always been a big negative for me. Hopefully they can also introduce this type of feature on cheaper plans.

yes I was on that one for a while and then switched to the 10 hour plan to save some money in months with no trips. During this time they canned the 20 hour plan so could not switch back.

Now the 10 hour plan is gone as well so as soon as I go to any other plan that is by the Mb I won't be able to go back. Sucks.

I have had sessions of 3 Gb on the timed plans over time. One time it did a virus software update and a Windows update so had downloaded near 50Mb in around 10 minutes before I had even browsed a web page. Would have been massive cost on the Mb plans with the bleep y data limits.

That 20 hour plan is Gold.

I'm on the 20hr plan too, it is quite easy to set your sysyem up so you have to approve each download/update. Same can be done for emails.
We had to do that as we use Bgan sat internet as well,$10 a MB !
Now is the only time you own
Decide now what you will,
Place faith not in tomorrow
For the clock may then be still

I recently got Telstras pre-paid Wireless USB modem for on the road as you only pay for what you use, you can let it run out and sit idle for months then charge it up with $30 and go again.
What ever amount I pay it only lasts for 30 days, but if I top up then the 30 day limit extends from the date of the last recharge. However if I pay $10 which is the minimum I can only download 135mb, but if all you require is email contact that is fine and $20-$30 for a month would give you plenty.
Only problem is downloads and Google searches because on the lower scale they are limited and you can't make telephone calls, except for emergency.
I use Skype which is excellent and I call world wide for minimal cost where I talk to someone in Canada for 45-60 mins and it only costs about 60 cents, but I can't use that with Telstra.

$20 recharge 150MB download
$30 " " 225MB
$40 " " 300MB
$50 " " 625MB

I maintain a website for veteran golfers and can do it on the road with this setup, but, adding, updating or simply browsing sites with lots of images sucks the $$$'s quickly, so I just do text and ban emails with large attachments.

Virgin prepaid = $15 for 1 GB with 30days to use it ,, yes know that Virgin coverage does not extend as far as telstra but then again who needs to send emails while transversing the tanami ?

Telstra doesn't work in the Tanami either.......but it does work in a hell of a lot of places where others don't.

You may also need a lot more than 30 days to download that gig on the optus network.....

hl ,twas only pointing out the vast price variation , $20 for 150mb ?? no wonder that the yank in charge of telstra pays himself $12mil + per yr yet still does not provide a service to the remote 4% of the POPULATION same as ALL the other carriers.

Axel, the big variation in prices may have something to do with the fact that the NextG network actually works, and does so in many more places than all the others. The current data allowances on NextG are quite reasonable unless you want to watch live video or download til you drop. For many travellers who just want to check emails, read the news and maybe do a bit of banking, 150MB for 10 bucks a month is not a bad deal. Nobody will ever be able to cover the whole land mass (except via satellite).
I just wanted to point this out. As for Sol's 12mill... well, hopefully the current mess will put a damper on the salary astronomics....but I doubt it. As long as these guys sit on each others boards, they will scratch each others backs.
