Hi all,
My GQ (180,000km) has recently developed a rear diff whine which becomes evident (annoying) at 100km/h plus. I got the diff oil changed at the last service, is this likely to be caused by incorrect oil, or is this more likely to be permanent damage that will cost lots of $$$ to fix?
Cheers
Graeme

it won,t be an oil issue ,
its an adjustment , contact between the crown wheel and pinion.
maybe a worn brearing

Hi Graeme,
The oil change is the possible source. These diffs are pretty unbreakable, so I'd be checking that. Esp as it's only done 180k. They've probably used a "fleet" all-purpose gear oil!
When I changed the oil in the transfer case of my GQ-Mav, I used a Shell oil, and straight away, I got a whine at about 90k. Changing to BP multigear, same rating, fixed the whine. Not criticising Shell, but obviously, the characteristics must have been slightly different.
I used to use BP Limslip 140 in the diff of my GQ/Mav but you can only get it now in big drums. Currently running Castrol LSX85W140 in the diff of my GU, no problems (Nissan confirmed it as ok, even tho a straight 140 LSD is recommended).
It's not a great deal of money to change it and see.
Cheers,
Gerry

Just had the diff in the Statesman done (250,000Ks) as it developed a nasty whine full time. Cost me $850 and boy what a difference ;-)
Full set of bearings and re-lapped....

Many years ago i had a VC SL/E commodore wagon, decided to change the diff oil one service, it started whining when coasting only, shouldnt have but any way that was at 190k,had sold it to friends and at last check before it was written off (395k) the diff had gotten no worse. cheers Paul

Cheap experiment! At a guess the oil should be about 140EP and add a dose (as per directions) of Wynns™ HPLS now called,it seems 'Gear Oil Treatment' 125ml plastic filler tube P/No 59420. Use only mineral based quality brand. Was there any shrapnel in the oil at the drain plug (magnetic). If no big chunks, just fair wear and tear if not using the Wynns product. We accidently ran our XC Falcon 600 kms with zero oil in diff that had been treated with the Wynns product. (Lesson: Don't make gaskets out of the cardboard on the rear of a writing pad. Or maybe pad makers should use gasket material for folk like me;-) Reckon you'l get another 50,000 ks out of it yet.We took our 1980 Diahatsu F55 off the road as we have too many other reg
wheels. Always greased,by me,Wynns red grease. Still has all original universals and steer knuckle bearings. No slaack anywhere. I had bought new UVs to put in it at nine year old to do
Cape York. Mechanic said no wear in originals. Still have the boxed UV's at home yet Dia is 28yrs & towed 2 ton plus on our tandem trailer often.

Hi Graeme,
Nissan spec SAE140 limslip oil plus a friction modifier. I had issues with my diff ~ 20,000km after getting diff oil replaced by mechanic. Replaced oil myself (Penrite limslip 140) plus added friction modifier 150mls (Penrite limslip additive) and no problems since then.
Regards,
Hugh
