Hi there, any recommendations with sealing around the windows on the surface mount camec/aussie traveller type windows. exterior of van is aluminium clad so gaps between the ripples can be up to 10mm almost.
Was planning on pumping some sort of adhesive/sealer all the way round and trying to cleanup to a nice bead on the exposed surface. Just trying to make sure it is
water tight. Any tips to make it less of mess?

Mask around the window, apply the sealant and then dip your finger in liquid soap and smooth the sealant with your finger Remove the making tape straight after you have smoothed the sealant, don't let the sealant dry and then try and remove the tape.

i cut some holes in the side of my van to put storage access doors in, i just used normal external silicone to seal it all up. i marked on the van the outside of the door hatches and then ran a decent bead of silicone just inside of the marks and then screwed the hatches into position. before you try and clean up the silicone, give it all a good spray of
water mixed with dishwashing detergent just like the tilers do when tiling a bathroom, keep spraying it as you clean up the excess silicone. the
water mixed with the detergent stops the silicone sticking to the rest of the metal on the van and window, let it all dry and then fill the gaps up that are left, remembering to spray it with the
water and detergent again as you clean up the mess.

Be very careful with the type of silicone you use as some silicone is very corrosive especially when used on aluminium.

You will have to go down to the hardware store (or do a google) and ask them for a non corrosive silicone. Don't use white sealastic your windows will fallout within 3 years. Remember you are using it on aluminium and not steel.

Good tips. thanks guys. will be a professional by the end. didn't think of the tape. yep was just going to use a silicone type product cause the window is screwed all around the frame for structural strength.

When i redid the seals around my old van ( windows, edging, roof hatches) i used an industrial caulking compound, cant remember its name but never had leaking issues again. it skins only, does not set hard. it is what would have been used originally on it. there is also a purpose ' caravan silicone' available in shops that sell caravan/trailer products. normal silicones only last short periods as the flex in caravans tend to make them lift so it only leaks again. been there, done that. cheers Paul

I would advise you to use products like I've included below to do the job as they designed specifically to do just that job. I personally would not use silicone. It is just too hard to get the stuff off once applied. I have successfully sealed a few windows using the Strip Caulking Tape. It was easy to do and not messy. I have no affiliations with Carac, they're just close by and I use them for caravan parts etc. I copied the products from their web site so you could see what I was talking about.
Carac:
http://www.carac.com.au/
STRIP CAULKING TAPE
A pliable mastic with a peel-off paper separator for ease of application. An ideal sealant for face fixed window flanges, edge moulds, etc. Product ID: 4525-050 6.4 x 13 x 5500mm
FOAM TAPE
60106. A unicellular foam
water proofing tape suitable for sealing externally fitted fixtures. Each roll is 6mm thick and 15 metres long. 25 rolls per carton. Product ID: 4541-050 12mm wide
Good luck,
Toolman

If you use silicone, coat the window frame where it will come in contact with the silicone with a light smear of grease, this will effectively make a gasket and the window will be easily removed.
Have a good one
