Hi there
We are planning a trip to visit either Kooljaman
Cape Leveque or Middle
lagoon and would be keen on which of the 2 areas to visit. We have to choose one only. We have 2 kids, 4WD obviously, Camper trailer 4WD, require beach for swimming, snorkling, would prefer the most picturesque and off beat spot. Im a Photographer and prefer remotness. We are keen on
the Beach shelters at Kooljaman but wondered if Middle
lagoon is any better. Any advise welcome. thanks

We (2 kids) stayed at Kooljaman in August. I booked an unpowered site and when I arrived we were given a clifftop space with amenities close by. We spent 4 days there where we watched whales breaching from our bed, we swam, snorkelled and walked many km's. You can drive on
the beach for a further 2 - 3 km where you will have
the beach to yourself. We could have stayed there for 2 weeks.
Middle
Lagoon is also nice just a bit less developed but give it a couple of years and I think it will be close to Kooljamin. The whole of the
Dampier Peninsular was a highlight of our 100 day trip. Don't forget to go to
Lombadina to get your beautifully fresh baked bread and 1 arm point. There is also
free camping down the bottom closer to
Broome. Do the
Willie Creek Pearl Farm tour. One of the best tours we did and it didn't break the bank. My 10 year old girl still talks about it.
Cheers Graeme

Middle
Lagoon - has a fairly enclosed
lagoon (obviously!) which provides more secure swimming for kids. At low tide can walk out on the fringing reef - really fascinating reef life to be seen. Same vista to the sunsetting west as Kooljamon, with more interest in photos from reef in mid distance. Pleasant enough
camping ground - choice of powered or unpowered, bit sheltered or shaded, or out more in the open. It is a good base for a day trip or two to explore further north.

If the wind is blowing then there is a little shelter on
the lagoon side at Middle
Lagoon.

"require beach for swimming"
Some consider beaches to be safe for swimming.
I would not risk my kids in the
water anywhere this far north.
There ARE salties, but they are YOUR kids.
You need to book for
Cape Leveque.
Cheers,
Peter

Why only one place? If going to the area, I'd be visiting both.
Have been to and camped at both.
Middle
Lagoon is more protected from wind, more 'peaceful', better and probably safer beach for swimming (though the tide goes out a very long way)
Cape Leveque has fantastic rock formations for photography. There are a couple of examples in my profile.
Why not
camp at Middle
Lagoon and do a day trip to
Cape Leveque if you don't want to move
camp.
Cape Leveque can easily be done in a day for the highlights. Just make sure there is a low tide while you are there so you can do a walk right around the Cape. Fantastic rock formations.
On the way back from
Cape Leveque, consider the back road to
Beagle Bay (with shell church) for variety. Ask at the office at Middle
Lagoon for a mud map.
Great area. Enjoy it.

You can also
snorkel at Middle
Lagoon. Not quite the Great Barrier Reef, but some nice coral and fish to see.
Ask the locals while you are there.

Snorkelling is also good at
Cape Leveque.
One Arm Point is also worth a day trip.

I agree with Norm, my pick would be Middle
Lagoon, then day trip's to the Cape and
Lombadina, fantastic beach at
Lombadina lot's of shell's, plus you can fish the
creek at Middle
Lagoon at low tide i walked the
mangroves and picked up a few muddies, it was our pick of our W.A trip+ diving with the whale shark's and blah, blah, blah
Enjoy

Yes Tom,
Lombadina is a great little community. The most impressive aboriginal community we have visited.
Well worth a visit to see what aboriginal communities can achieve in the right circumstances and with strong community leadership.
