Now that we have grandkids, it would be nice for the missus & I to be able to take our kids & their partners plus grandkids away in the one vehicle plus still be able to tow the boat and launch it on sandy beach / river ramps. In order to do this, we would need a 7 seater 4WD wagon and those imported Mitsubishi Delica 4WD wagons seem to fit the bill nicely. I would appreciate feedback from anyone who has owned one of these as to whether it would be a reasonable buy. I would prefer a manual but most advertised seem to be autos. I would also consider petrol or diesel.

Don't own one, but the Gen 2 (generation 2 - 1990 to 1999) Paj has similar mechanicals.

I understand there are two basic differences.
They are built on the Triton chassis from what I understand, and there is the leaf spring rear or the 3 link coil sprung rear as per my Gen 2 pajero.

There is a delica club some where too.

but I have problems accessing it at the moment.

Sorry I don't have any feed back from owning one.

Old Mal,
I do have one for the specific purpose of carrying 6 people in comfort.
As it is not my main vehicle ( I have Co car - Pajero) I do not use it a lot.
Manuals are hard to get.
Diesels are the most common but you can get the 3 litre petrol.
Diesel pump on the early ones will play up with the new low sulphur diesel
Whilst they are based on the ealry tritons they do not have a sub frame.
They are all coil suspension and have the same super select as the paj with auto hubs.
Become a member of the Delicaclub and you will get all the help you need including for sales.

Old Mal ...

Dont own one but did own one of the '84 L300 models ... great concept for a vehicle ... as long as you dont expect it to perform like a 60 series cruiser. Sort of a boxy Subaru ... good ability but not a truck ... if you get my point.

The Delicas come in SWB and LWB. Mate had these on her shopping list six mnths ago. Found a LWB at Dubbo to look at ... they're big ... lolol. She found it a bit daunting and went for a smaller vehicle and camper trailer.

The old triton diesel motor ( AFAIK ) and import model parts were also "against" points in my books. as stated previously - there is a Delica forum ... probably well worth the time to do some research there.

Most owners I have spoken to - even in some remote places - swear by them.

Aren't they a 5-link rear? And most have the 4M40 2.8 turbo diesel as used in local Pajeros from mid 90's to mid 2001. I have seen them in places you would think they could not go, but they do have a higher centre of gravity.

We (our group) hooked up with a couple with one after the Innaminka gathering and wanted to tag along to Birdsville via Walkers Crossing. They thought that they would then try a section of the Simpson Dessert Crossing and bail out when the going got too tuff. They were loaded up with camping gear and 3 kids and my first thoughts were "yeah right, they wont get far in that thing"
We most sadly left their company at Dalhousie Springs and frankly I was impressed as they had no difficuty with any sand dune crossing etc. Didn't have to snatch them over and dunes unlike one of our other travelling companions who suffers from a bovine disease and shall remain nameless.
There was also a long wheelbased vehicle at Dalhousie as well howeverwe didnt speak to them as to which way they were going.
Cheers

Yes Des, we were there too and I was surprised and impressed with the Delica's capability.

But then, it's a Mitsubishi ;-)

Old Mal, I could probably arrange the owner's phone number if you want?

Cheers, RayJen

There are one or two in our 4wd club and my boss has just bought one along with two of his friends (looks pretty cool the 50+ surfie dudes hanging out down the beach with the 3 of them).

By all reports everyone is happy with them and no problems so far
