Engel Fridge should we run continuously

Hi there
We just purchased and Engel 40Lt fridge. I have heard that it is best to run the fridge continuously. ie run it in your home when not travelling like a normal fridge. Others have had problems when you let the fridge sit idle for months on end. Any feedback from Engel users welcome. thanks

G'day imjames

I have two 60 litre Engles and both run, or more rightly both are powered up full time, one lives in the luxury of the airconditioned house, the other lives a life less kind, in the back of the Cruiser, on 240v when parked up at home and on 12v when not parked up at home. Both Engles have served me well for close to twenty five years, although not completely trouble free, but acceptable for their treatment.

Same here.... I have a 40 litre in the box on the Patrol which runs 24/7/365. Powered by 240 at home and runs off 3rd battery when I'm not at home.

Camper trailer also has an upright Engel which I usually leave running between camping trips, but do sometimes turn it off if I know it's going to be more than a month between outings.

Cheers

If you need the additional 'fridge space, then by all means use it, but in my experience it is by no means necessary to run the thing for the sake of it...

The older of my 2 Engels is 30yrs old as we speak, and (as with the newer one) if it's needed, it's switched on.. if not, then it's left off (always leave a folded towel or similar under the lid to allow air into the cabinet when not in use)....

As I said, 30yrs old , and in that time it would have sat for several months at a time without being used (indeed, it's approx. 5 months since it was last run, and may be a while before it get's used again), and it still works as good as new..

Bottom line... If ya have use for it, use it, but from my experience, long (or short) periods of inactivity will do them no harm at all...

I agree with Ed.

Our first fridge was an Engel, had it for 7 years. It ran as needed, on one occasion it ran constantly for 18 months on a houseboat. At other times it sat idle for months and only turned on when needed.

Had a Waeco for the last 4 years and treated the same.

We haven't had any problems with either.

The only one I have heard of with problems is the "Eutectic" style (Autofridge I think) which needs regular running to keep the Eutectic fluid from "gummying" up.

Cheers,

Jim.

Hi all

Have a 40 litre engel in the truck - when travelling it is on - when the camper is parked at home it is off - no troubles in ten years.

Others might have different knowledge but cant see what leaving it on all the time achieves except wear it out - understand that engel compressor is totally enclosed in refrigerant-
.

Hope this helps

G'day imjames,

I too have got the engel 40 litre fridge and only turn it on a day before heading out which is about every 2 months and have not experienced any difficulties.

The manual doesn't say it must be operated 24/7

You should be fine.

Cheers.

My old green 29l, about 25 years old I reckon, but not sure since I got it off my parents about 15 years ago.
Run it when we need it for a trip. Maybe once or twice a year.
Mainly 12v use.
Only TLC it has got was about 5 years ago when I took the end cover off and blew some air over the coil to get rid of some red dust.

Hi All

We have 25 litre & 40 litre Engel Fridges, the 40 litre is in the Truck
on a permanent basis, switched on when needed, and the 25 litre
is in our Garage, which runs all the time, full of Beer, handy when I
get thirsty down stairs working, a Engel Fridge Repair Man, once told
me, to allways switch them on for a short time, eg 1x hour, at least
once a month, if they are not in use.

Cheers

Hi
I believe it is good practise to give a short run every couple of months .I have heard that sometimes oil can gums up if left for long periods causing STICKING OF VALVES ETC .Similar suggestion for domestic fridges & air cons.

imjames,

I have recently purchased an Engel Eclipse. In the literature provided it states to run the fridge at home using like a bar fridge.

Well folks i guess its best we keep hold of our old Engel fridges. Like the saying goes they dont build em like they use to. ours have been to hell and back. Turned off when not in use. Keep the lid ajard and never lend em out. We keep a towel handy to fill the gaps as it gets emptied when in 4x4 mood. Keeps the drinks snug.
