Has anyone fitted a ram head on their 70 series snorkel? I spoke to ARB recently and they said it could be done but would not recommend it as the snorkel was not made for a ram head and may allow water into the air filter. I have checked the design of the air filter box and it appears there should be no trouble in that regard as the element sits high up and there is a drain in the bottom of the air filter box. The standard snorkel head is a bit noisy and to me looks like a vent pipe on a dunny roof. If anyone has already done this mod or have any advise on this it would be appreciated.

I have a ram head fitted on my 75 series snorkel & have never had problems with water entering the air filter even in heavy rain storms. It has been on there for quite a few years. If you have any doubts then you can always rotate it so the opening faces in the reverse direction of travel. I do this sometimes in very dusty conditions. Cheers.

If you buy a genuine Donaldson ram head from a truck supply or somewhere like Western Airfliters out Blacktown way they are designed to stop water entering.
I had one fitted to a 75 series for 15 odd years which never got water in despite me testing it with a garden hose while the engine was running.
The copies won't work as well.

I have one on my 76 series wagon and have never had a problem. I have just returned from the Kimberley. I don't seem to get the vibration I did with the OEM snorkel top.

1. If you do change to a ram type head be aware that if you around vines or low hanging bush these can snag on the 'forward facing 'hook' top. I do a lot of bush driving and have turned the ram head to face the rear (as do most other people around here). I have seen snorkel tops ripped off when snagged by a vine.

2. I would 'bog' up that little drain hole in the lower compartment of the air filter housing if you intend on doing deep water crossings. Think about it - if water can get out then it can also get in.

G`Day all,,,,,Thank you all for your helpful replies. After reading all the above I will go for the Ram head as it seems the water ingress is not a problem but as suggested will look around for the right one. Must say SWMBO is not impressed with all the extra money being spent after the cost of the new vehicle, but guess I am not on my own there. Only roof rack and long range tank to go now but will keep that dark for the time being, let her get over the $800 Firestone air bags I fitted yesterday first.
Thanks again all,,Regards,, Nav.
