Dear All,

any ideas where we could camp for a few days around the Wee Japser/Braidwood area were we can have a campfire at night in November? Wee Jasper rangers say "no go"

Much appreciated

Well it is hot and we are already in the NO fire season i believe, it would be irresponsible to light a fire now.. You have the other 6 months of the year to have a fire.. regards Michael

Hi Michael

Please know that we are extremely conscientious and careful campers.

In our travels this time last year, it was cold at night in parts and we were permitted to have a campfire.

Or you could try Stewarts Crossing which is also on the Shoalhaven a few kms south of Oallen Crossing and IMHO a better spot. BUT you need to take your own wood as there is none there (others use it as fast as it comes off the trees). ALSO there is a sign there to indicate total fire ban days - it (the sign) was closed when we were there 10 days ago, but when the sign is displayed it really means what it says, doesn't matter how responsible you are.

Thanks Pepper 2

Thanks for the lead

I have tried to find Oallen Ford before - without luck.
and also Charleyon.

Don't have a GPS - going by a Hemma Map.

We always check with rangers and comply with fire bans because we love the bush too.

Zeddie,

Understand your difficulty finding those places as quite a few maps dont show them. Oallen Ford Road turns off (to the west) the Braidwood-Nerriga road about 4 km south of Nerriga. Well signposted. Road into Oallen Ford is bitumen most if not all of the way - 10 to 15km. Charleyong is about halfway between Braidwood and Nerriga and close to Stewarts Crossing Turn-off. Stewarts Crossing is about 3km in fromT/O.

If the map does not show the names of the crossings just look where these roads cross the Shoalhaven river. Both areas have large free camping areas but there are no facilities.

Hope that helps,

Val.

Right now you should be OK in 2WD. Stewarts is sandy but with care you should be able to get a reasonable distance off the road. Oallen is river gravel so should be OK. Water is currently only a few inches over both crossings.

Cheers,

Val.
