Hi Fellow Campers, this is our first trip to Fraser Island. We have a camper trailer but wish to avoid the backpackers and their alleged antics. Bush camping is normally our thing, but campgrounds are fine if quiet/peaceful. So, where to camp? Strong opinions welcome!

I would have to say avoid the central station, my other half nearly got snotted for asking others to be quiet! Real shame as it was a lovely campsite with a really nice feel to it, it was just spoiled by the small percentage.

I believe the bush camping is much better, but couldn't really say as we left the next morning.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Chris

we always camp on the beach, find a spot where nobody can camp next to you and you won't have a problem with others. if you need showers then maybe choose a spot on the beach somewhere near Dundaburra so you can just duck up there for a shower. alot of backpackers arn't allowed past indian head with their hire vehicles, so for a campground abit further north maybe choose Waddy.
as a rule we camp abit north of cathedral shops on the beach, relatively central to all the places to visit both north and south. in saying that it's a big island, we were there for 2 weeks last month and did over 1000 klms of driving on the island itself.

Hi Phillip,
I just came back from fraser island 2 weeks ago. My cousin and i did beach camping and it was our first time to camp on the island. We were originally going for 5 nights but ended at 3 nights because of bad weather and strong wind warnings rolling in. we We still saw attractions inland between eurong and ocean lake.

We took my landcruiser ute, swags, water, extra fuel, fishing gear etc, etc, just loaded the ute up. We got the barge from river heads. Had both 90lt tanks full and a 20lt jerry of diesel. I only used 2/3rds of a tank of diesel.

Next time, i will book ahead and definately stay at the waddy point camp ground for the whole week. Concrete pits for fires, no sand blowing in, shady trees surrounding hot showers, amenties, fenced off site, no backpackers. Since you have a camper trailer, leaving it set up for a few days at a time at camp sites would be easier than camping behind dunes, though people still do it.

Have a base camp and do treks each or every second day. And make sure your vehicle's 4wd is mechanically sound before you go as the inland tracks to the various lakes are recked. My front left-hand wheel bearing and cv joint decided to collapse and seize up while waiting for the barge to home!

Cheers, Have fun, Brian.

Waddy Point would be good but its a fair way up the sand. There are several good sites. We stayed at Cathedral Beach and I would give that a try for your first stay, its central and comfortable and now the bitch who used to run it is gone its got to be a greater place.

Hi Phillip

Had a week on Fraser in September - sensational! Even I caught some nice Tailor! We camped on the beach between Happy Valley and Cathedral somewhere. Would have preferred Waddy to be away from the idiot element but it's just sooooo far, geez it's a big place Fraser! Those boofhead backpackers are an absolute menace, no idea how to 4WD, 100 mile an hour everywhere they go, loud and obnoxious. See a Troopy with a bright yellow tarp on the roof rack coming towards you and watch out! Tuck yourself into the hill behind a dune and hope you avoid them, if you're travelling off peak you should be fine, it's just the Xmas break that will sort you out. It's a blast Fraser, enjoy!

We camped at Ocean Lake last time we were there, it was a 2km drive to go into Ocean Lake itself for a bath and cool down swim and not one person in sight!
We are heading there for a week in the first week of December, heading over with some other forumites so not sure what the plan is for camping spot yet.

Enjoy Fraser!

Just got back from Fraser yesterday, had a great time. Plenty of fish, backpackers and sun.We took our old van on its last trip and stayed at Dundaburra camp ground. Its about 6km north of Cathedral shops an is fenced. In 9 nights we only had 2 nights when b/packers camped. We would go there again as it was a very quiet camp.
