Hi All,
I am after a bit of advice and comments on a problem I am having with my 92 4runner V6 Petrol that I just had coverved to LPG.
When running on Preimum Unleaded I get about 8.5 Klm per 1 Litre
But when I go to LPG it goes down to 3.5 Klm per 1 Litre.
I am taking it back to the LPG installers during the week to investigate the problem but before I go back, I was seeking some idea's of what could cause such a change in fuel comsumption?
Does anyone have any suggestions that may help?
Thanks in advance

Hi brucem. I to have a 92 V6 4Runner that was converted to Direct Injection LPG in April last year. It has a 75 litre LPG
tank ( mounted where the spare wheel used to be -now mounted on a spare wheel carrier off the rear bumper ) On long open road touring I`m getting around 9-11 litres per 100Km and on petrol I used to get 15 -17 litres/100Km. You dont say what type of system was installed - conventional or Direct Injection. I opted for the Direct Injection as it gives me better economy, no difference in performance ( Dyno Tested for economy and performance figures ) and to date I`ve never had a problem. After the government - state and federal $3000 the net cost to me was $1200 . Best investment I`ve ever made on a motor vehicle. if you have had the conventional system fitted, then from the feedback I have gathered over the past 12 months, you dont get the same economy/performance that the direct injection system gives.

Yes I do have a conventional system fitted, I wasn't offered a choice and hadn't done enough research and am no regreting it.

20/20 hindsight is a wonderful thing - if only we could have a crystal ball. Before I had my vehicle convereted I spent about three months doing a lot of research, and I was horrified at some of the things I found and was told. Then I heard about the Direct Injection from someone in the LPG industry ( he is a licensed and certified LPG Installer and does all types of motor vehicle servicing and repairs ) and after many hours of crunching the numbers and fact finding, I went with the D.I. system and have never regretted it. As the 4Runner has only just done 113890 Km ( was used by the wife as her shopping trolly) I decided to get rid of the big gas guzzler 4x4 and bought the wife another smaller station wagon, and I opted to take over the 4Runner. Glad I did as its one of the nicest vehicles I have driven. A bit underpowered, but plenty of grunt in Lo Range, but have plans for putting the 3.4 litre quad cam Prado V6 motor in, one of these days. Unfortunately the conventiinal system will not deliver the same performance and economy as the Direct Inject does. So unless you want to spend the extra $$$$$$ on getting it converted to D.I. I`m sorry to say that you are stuck with the system that wont deliver. PS// As a member of the
grey haired nomads, speed and performance or not a priority anymore, but the extra grunt for over taking and towing with the Prado V6 will be worth the money spent, and still utilising the D.I LPG system.

Your fuel economy sounds a bit extraordinary, as I've got a 2000 2.7L petrol injected Hilux which I have also had converted to LPG and on petrol it gets around 7km/L (15L/100km) and I've heard V6 4runners only getting 6km/L. Anyway
mine gets 5km/L (20L/100km) on LPG, so I end up using 40% more gas than petrol, but luckily LPG is less than half the price.

What you forget is that my 4Runner has DIRECT INJECTION hence the difference in gas consumption. Also its the way its tuned as its all set up by computer. The conventional LPG system is not as efficient as the DIRECT INJECTION . Using the DI system is 100% more efficient than the old conventional system. So my fuel consumption on LPG is not only extraordinary, but 100% better then running on petrol. 600 Km on a
tank of LPG to 350 -400km on petrol has to be better using the latest technology. Using the DI Systm there is absolutely no difference in performance on or off road. Hence I use LPG all year round and occasionally run it on petrol to stop sludge and other bits og gunk from forming on the injectors, fuel lines and causing premature fuel pump failure. Its been in 18+ months now and would do it all over again if I bought a new car.

Extraordinary indeed.
The facts are DI is about 20% more efficient than the old mixer system. Still uses about 10% more than Petrol and there IS a minor drop in performance.
I know this because:
1. I drive a fuel injected V6 which has DI LPG fited, I've done fuel comparos and performance tests against a stopwatch.
2. I've discussed it at length with the Tech Guru at Parnell Prins who manufacture the system.

Parnell Prins is not the manufacture of my system. Its and Italian made system, and was dyno tuned with an onboard laptop to program the final settings to achive optimum economy and performance.
I dont need a stop watch as that proved nothing - human error in activating the stopwatch. Eveything was done on a Dynamometer where accurate readings were recorded and final , and minute adjustments were made while it was performing on the dyno. The fact that I get better gas consumption than I do on petrol is due to the more efficient system. I barely use petrol except for cold starts in the morning . When the coolant temp reaches 55 degrees C, it autmatically switches over to LPG. And a range of 600 Km on LPG wins hands down over a lousy 350 - 400 Km. on petrol. 4Runner were reknowned for ther lousy fuel consumption due to the fact that the 3V-ZE motor was designed for the early Camry, but the Japs in their infinite wisdom shoe horned the underpowered 3.00 litre motor into a heavy body. With the impending change over to the quad cam 3.4 litre Prado motor I guess I can expect better fuel consumption and about the same on LPG. But until the conversion takes place I have no way of knowing until its all up and running and the LPG system is then recalibrated for the 3.4 engine
