i've had computers for years. only for web browsing, email and last 3 years oziexplorerer on trips and no problems. except replacing batteries after a few years.
until saturday morning doing an update. it was service pack 3 for xp home and when it finished and rebooted there it was.
my son has gone into f8 f12 ect and scanned things for hours and it always says everything is ok
the recuring message is " attempt was made to execute non executable memory"
i could spend the rest of my life reading the info on google.
what would someone with more knowledge than me do.?
regards peter

Reformat and install XP with service pack 2.
If it ain't broke - don't fix it.

You could do a system restore first before doing anything else.
Easy as to do and you can restore your computer back to where it was before you did the update.

This is gunna sound strange coming from me, as anyone who knows me, also knows that I know Jack Chit about computers.
BUT: I seem to recall that this "re-program back to the future" stuff has to be done AS SOON as you turn the thing on..... You power-up and IMMEDIATELY hit F12 so that it doesn't try to open, but goes into some other set-up proceedure.
Sorry if you already know all this stuff, but I only found out about it recently when we were having similar issues with our laptop.
Hope it helps in some way.

Well admitted Roachie !
That's right, better keep out of it.
I have more idle time than you, over the years, to learn a little about "puters", and even then I get frustrated.
Cheers Mate

ps... from now on I will put on my glassed when texting, but I did really have your house # only, and have since deleted that one all together.

The dreaded blue screen on SP3 - Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
Yes, had one of my systems do the same on XP3 load.
The other three were OK.
Did a system restore back to a previous state.
But it was a pain trying to get the system to boot to get to the restore point. Took me about 2 days. But then I am no wiz on computers either.
There is a lot of info on this problem on the Microsoft web site in the knowledge base. Can be a number of things. There is four pages here.
microsoft knowledge base link
Still don't quite know what fixed the problem, I just had to work my way thorugh it.

Sorry, XP3 should read SP3. Still have the jitters remembering that screen coming up after loading SP3. Not a good memory.

Sounds like you may have a conflict with USB drivers. If you have any external USB items connected then remove them & try a reboot. If this doesn't work you could try booting your PC using the WinXP install CD & doing a repair from the install option. Otherwise you may have to do a fresh install. Best of Luck. Cheers.

Peter,
What type of processor does your computer have? Intel or AMD Athlon? SP3 doesn't go
well with an Athlon processor.

if it happened immediately after xp upgrade and you can boot into safe mode try a restore to before the upgrade.
if that doesnt work ring microsoft and ask for tech support.
i had a problem some time ago after doing upgrade and they helped me sort it out for free.
Have also used them on other occasions and they have either directed me to the help pages for DIY or have helped for a nominal fee...$60.00 i think
