greetings all - Over the weekend i headed up to barrington tops - on the way up i get this occasional strong smell of acid -- stopped to find my main battery is VERY hot and a little traces of acid on the top ( its the non servicing type battery- ie no caps to top up fluid) Now i have a duel battery set up vie a REDARK isolator and the waco Fridge runs from the second battery(isolated battery)

the fridge was working hard as one of the kids turned the fridge of that morning and it dropped to about-2 deg on the panel - we normally have it run on mains for about 1 - 2 days before leaving whilst full of food to get to full coldness before leaving to reserve battery usage and set for about-16 for travel

Now should i presume that the main battery is over charging as its trying to top up the second battery after the redark isolator has connected the 2 in parallel

your thoughts and solutions >?

Back in the Reg days, I would say the voltage regulator is the problem, over charging you can check with a volt gauge.

but today it maybe the alternator, doing the same as above.

this is only what I think, I would get it checked out by an auto sparkie

Cheers

If it's a remote-sensing Alternator, the voltage sensing input wire may have fallen off - or a fuse has blown (on Pajeros).

It could be one of many things.

The ONLY way one battery can put significant charge into a second battery, is if the second battery has a shorted cell.

Hows it going ,

I had the same problem a month ago the first time I was towing my CT, except I boiled the aux battery.

First I thought it got boiled by the turbo but did it again the next day with a short drive .

Decided it couldnt be the voltage regulator cause it would have killed both batteries ?

Just put a new battery in and has been ok since.

Glenn.

Boc,
Sounds like the battery is collapsing internally.

Way too many variables here. Could be an internal fault in the battery such as a dead or collapsed cell. Could be a faulty alternator overcharging or depending on your dual battery setup it could also be a fault in the starting battery as well.

Best advice is spend the money and get a decent auto electrician to do the diagnosis otherhwise you will end up chasing yourself down many rabbit holes.

As well it will be worthwhile checking the wiring to the fridge to ensure the current draw is OK
