Does anyone have any first hand information on dash mount GPS mapping devices that can also incorporate a reverse camera operation.

The old man is looking at purchasing one that will function well, be easy to operate but will also allow him to have a reverse camera integrated into it.

At the moment the sales reps are trying to talk him into $2000-4000 units from Pioneer and Kenwood that replace the stereo system in the Prado.

Personally I think the 6 stack and bluetooth setup in the prado is fantastic and to replace it would be an overkill to say the least. If there is a good unit that can do the mapping and reverse camera then I think he would be rapt.

I have only found this one Navi-Gator but its a tad cheap and nasty (Supercheap are selling them)

Any ideas hints and experienced opinions?

Thanks

Matt.

Ive got a 4.3" Ebay Jobbie that does that & also runs Ozi perfectly.

Have a look around the Patrol Forum & other GPS Forums, as people have got other bigger units doing this & also the ones that replace the Double Din Radio with everything (GPS, DVD, TV, Radio etc etc)

DDR is this just a screen or was it a street map unit and you also use it to display Ozi as well. (multiple inputs?)

Thanks

Depends on what sort of mapping you are talking about. If just street mapping there are probably a few around that will do both

If you want street and off road you will need something different.

A good place to ask this question with a LOT MORE DETAIL of

exactly what you expect from the unit would be the GPS

Australia forum

www.gpsaustralia.net

You could look here

www.polarisrearvision.com.au

Personally I would buy two separate units

Thanks for the reply Graham I will check those links. Having looked at many online...its hard to get the facts out of sales information, hence why Im looking for real experience with different units.

I appreciate that any combined unit would be a compromise but its a small price to pay that having two screens mounted to the dash. I also am trying to reduce the possibility of the unit being attractive to the light-handed borrowers out there. If its Tom-Tom style unit then they just lift out and are pocket sized, so make it convienient to remove once inside.

Dad isnt looking for detailed mapping (ie Oziexplorer) more street mapping so that when arriving at a new destination can quickly and safely navigate around without driving aimlessly trying to get the layout of a place.

I dont see having a rear view camera using the mapping screen to display the image when needed is a complicated task. Stupidly I assumed the unit would be common but its not looking that way now!!??

Thank you for your reply.

Cheers Doug....I was going cross-eyed trolling through all my seaches on the net.

Do you know offhand if the Nuvi 5000 switches to camera the same as the SP7200?

I can contact Garmin but if you know that would be great!

I will forward the links onto the old fella so he can have a look!

Thanks Mate.

Well I would presume it would go to reverse cam mode when reverse gear is selected . if wired up correctly.

Helll yeah I want one but with the wedding coming up in 6 weeks I dont think I will get it past the future (but thinks she is current) minister for war and finance!

I have sent the link of to the old fella with a good emphasis on the adventure pack!!

I see the street pilot states it flicks to camera when reverse is selected... it just would be annoying if the Nuvi 5000 requires you to change the input when you want to use the camera.

Might shoot them off an email and let you know if you are interested.

The 5000 auto detects a video signal on the video input. Wring needed:

12v to camera from reversing light
camera video cable to 5000
and maybe adapter cable from video cable to 3.5mm video input on 5000

Easy!

cheers

PS you don;t need to touch anything on the 5000 screen to see the reversing camera image in default mode

However the 5000 is quite felixble so you can view the image by touching the screen manually, for example if you had a camera at the rear of a caravan.

Thanks guys...

Brian you might get an enquiry in the very near future from an old boy in Perth....I have sent him both the links at GPSOz for the Nuvi 5000 and the Adventure pack (great value).

He does eventually want to include the caravan/camper trailer camera as well so thats perfect about the user interface. Have the vehicle camera flick on when in reverse (Prado has shocking rear view with high window and rear mounted spare) and then be able to include the camera on the towed trailer!

I can stop looking now ahhhhh!

All the best

Matt.

Not quite, one camera input only, so you would have to add a switch between the cameras (car and caravan) and the 5000 video input.

I run ozi on a laptop and am not computer savvy enough to try and get ozi to run on it.

I even think the 7" screen is too small as we like the very detailed maps running and find the 15.4" screen great.

Dad had a look at the operating system and on his with the two maps there was a windows system he found were as mine with route 66 it was different system.

I bought a Logic Gear XL488 (now replaced by a newer version). Runs street navigation, can switch to Oziexplorer, automatically switches to reversing camera when in reverse and has handsfree mobile. Was $500 with the camera.

I rate it for my requirements.

I believe they are similar to the Mio units.
