Hi all,
I am heading down to The
Grampians for the
Melbourne Cup Weekend. I was just wondering if anyone can tell me of a couple of good sites to see whilst 4WDing.
Thanks,
Iceman

It's been a while but we stopped at
Boroka Lookout on the way to to spending a night at Smiths Mill
Camping Ground.
Both were great spots. Be sure to take your canera if you go to the
Lookout. We got some great shots on Sunset.
Not that far from
Halls Gap and open campgrounds there were not penned in like a few we saw before the climb.
Hope this helps
Cheers
Paul

There are heaps of great walks - you can get maps from the info centre in the main street.
Try:
Mackenzie falls
The
Pinnacle
Delleys Dell
Boronia Peak
On busy weekends it's best to do the walks early as most come out at lunch time. The first two are the most popular and are very busy in the afternoons.
Have fun - it's a beautiful part of Victoria.

We were there about 3 years ago, not long after the fires and when some areas were still closed off. Some sections in the northern and southern parts of the
park were available for free
bush camping. We had a couple of excellent camps in these areas. Call in at the
Park Visitor Centre at
Halls Gap and the rangers will show you where you can
bush camp (assuming that you are still allowed to!).
Cheers,
Val.

If it is open the 4WD track around Victoria Range is worth doing.

G'day Iceman - we are also going to the
Grampians this weekend - we are staying at the big caravan
park right in town - this is our second venture with our new caravan - after eight years with a camper trailer - where are you staying? We are easily recognised - Nissan Terrano - Exploroz wheel cover on the back - say g'day if you see us. The
Grampians are terrific - there are so many
places to see - head out towards Roses Gap - lots of good
places out that way - down to Hollow Mountain - go the NP place just outside of town - lots of maps and info - latest road info as
well - we were there just after fires, and it was an amazing thing to see the scope of that inferno - we went to a place called Devils Garden and I have some absolutely spectacular photos of the grass trees flowering -natures candelabra -
wildflowers everywhere at this time of the year. Have you done the walk up
Grand Canyon?
Anyway have a good time, may see you there

Hi Julie,
Thanks for writing, we are staying at the
Lakeside Caravan Park. If I see you will say g'day. I have a brown 2006 Nissan patrol with a Ozexplor sticker on the back window, it also has a black roof rack and cargo cage.
Thanks for the tips will be having a great look around,
Regards
Iceman

Check whether this has been reopened since fires, but if it has, is a really scenic circuit drive on dirt roads. From Reids
Lookout, go down the
Glenelg River Rd, which passes by the Boreang
camp ground, then west of
Moora Moora Reservoir. At Strachans Huts
camp, you have 2 choices: 1) cross the river, take track on the western side back to the north, becomes the Syphon track, then Lodge rd back to east to Boreang again, then back up to Reids
Lookout. (or you could take Roses
Creek Rd back to the Zumsteins-
Halls Gap Rd. 2) From Strachans on south to Chimney Pots, then Harrop Tk to
Red Rock Rd, then Lodge Rd and then same as from Lodge rd in option 1.
That whole central
Glenelg River Valley has lots of interesting tracks, picnic and
camp spots.
A lot of people miss exploring the section north of
Halls Gap. Another good drive is north on Mt Zero Rd to Roses Gap then south on Roses Gap rd and circuit back to
Halls Gap. Or you could keep on going north from Roses Gap to Hollow Mt and Mt Stapylton.
There are usually good maps available for purchase in
Halls Gap.

Thanks Wendy, I will have a look at your
routes depends of the size of the river I haven't done a
river crossing of size yet. There looks to be heaps to see and lots of tracks around there.

Iceman
