I am considering buying some swags for my 3 kids all aged under 10 and the one I am looking at is one of those dome type swages with 320g/m2 (11 ounce) canvas. It has a waterproof base. Will this canvas keep rain out or will it leak? I notice a lot of other swages are either 600g/m2 or 12 or 14 ounce.

Hi Grass Parrot,A few years ago I bought a 12,ounce dome swag for my son,at home he loved it, however when we travelled he found it to be shallow inside. when we measured and compared to the Burke and Wills square top style, the dome swag was 6 inches shorter with much less space inside, however to answer your question. We have camped out in bad weather a few times now and have not had a single leak, always warm and dry. hope this helps.

Thanks Bob. As my kids are you the size shouldn't be a problem and they can upgrade when they get older. Im just making sure
water doesn't go straight through the canvas if we get caught in some rain.

You will have to weather it. You can hose it as much as you like but nothing works as
well as good ol natural rain. Put it up in the rain and leave it for a few days. It will most probably leak but once it drys give it a spray with some
water proofing agent and you will be right.
By weathering canvass, the
water swells the fibres and then when it drys it shrinks and pulls in nice a tight. So I have been informed.
Putting canvas in the rain and then letting it dry has worked for me for years.
The kids will love them. I put my little boy in his own swag at 4 years old and he loves it.

Scott,
have not heard of this being done before, but it makes sense and will give it a go. What is the ater proofing agent called and where would I get it?

Nearly every canvass item I have has leaked until it has been soaked with the rain. I have bought
Canvas centre pole tent
Southern cross roof bag
3 x swags
Freedom
camping roof top bag
Canvas box trailer cover
All items were hosed but still leaked until I put them up in the rain.
I have used the paint on
water proofer and the spray on. The paint on stuff is very fumey but works great.
You can buy it from boots and related stores.

Our
young un [ 9yr old ] loves his Oztrail
Mitchell swag , used for 150 nights out of the 175 nights of our last trip , no leaks , lots of room and being a full size means as he grows there is no need to upgrade to a larger size.
