Hi all,
Ive posted before stating that im planning a trip around oz and am looking for a troopcarrier. I have seen afew including one that is a 1989 model with 160,000 on it 4 $12500.
I was wondering what some of u guys thought about a car this age and condition doing my trip? This car is under budget but is in good nick, How do they shape up compared to the say, 95/00 models? Would it do the job?

Any info much appreciated

Oldsalty

Your money mate but a 89 model with only 160,000 ....... sniff ....sniff (was that a rat or what) anyhow back to the Troopy, $12,500 I feel is to much, it's nearly 20 years old , if as you say it's under your budget I would be looking for a younger one. This a big URL, hope it works

Have to agree with Doug on the suspect K's on it for that age.

If that is the genuine K's and it is not an ex mines vehicle then it may be OK. Those K's on a Troopy are nothing, it is good for 750,000 if properly maintained.

You need to try and establish its past history, look under it for signs of damage and in the chassis for mud. If you find any mud it will soon tell you if it was in a mine.

Cheers

I would not necessarily discount that the Ks are genuine. My Sahara is a 1988 model with only 170K Kms on the clock. I believe from its pristine condition inside and out that they are genuine.
In regards travelling around Australia in a vehicle this old - I would say there would be no problem at all. Just get a complete service done, incl brakes, bearings etc and replace all belts and fluids (radiator, brakes etc) and it would probably go around half a dozen times.
If it is a private sale - drill the owner about the vehicle and ask who the previous owner was and try and track them down and see if all the info is consistent. Check the oil filter - some owners scratch the Km on there when the oil was changed. This was how a big fraud (turning back speedos) was uncovered in Queensland a few years ago by a new owner finding KMs on oil filter a lot higher than speedo.

Hi salty,

That's some seriously low k's for an 89 model!

Which engine? 2H or 1HZ or maybe a 2F or 3F? I can't remember which year they changed them.

2H is the old 4.0 litre diesel, it's never the first to arrive but it always arrives.
1HZ is the replacement for the 2H, 4.2 litre and OHC.

2F is the old carburettor equiped petrol six. Bloody thirsty beast they are too.
3F is the replacement for the 2F petrol.

If it was in as good a condition as the k's and your report indicate it should be fine. There are plenty of people who do it successfully in older vehicles.

Do you intend to do serious offroading in it or more a camper setup? (I know I read and replied to one of your earlier questions but can't remember what you said)

The later models will have later model engines and be just that bit newer.

Depending on which engine is in it the gearbox may need some work around those k's.

Go for a run in it, get it nice and warm then look for oil and coolant leaks.

Run it up to about 80k's in 5th (if a 5 speed) and then back right off and let it slow way down. It may or may not jump out of 5th.

I'd budget for pulling all the wheels off and checking all the wheel bearings, brake linings and disk/drum machining. Replacing them for your journey would probably be prudent.

If its got the 2F-2H engine check the handbrake, it'll be a small drum on the back of the transfer case. They are a pain in the proverbial. Bloody things never work.

Usual other stuff, brakes, tyres, service history etc.

Oh and make sure it's not a well detailed ex-mine vehicle. They've usually got obscenely low k's and are absolutely buggered.

Hope that helps,

Geoff

Dont worry about low milage for age salty,

Missed out on a 1982 troopy a couple of months ago with only 8000klm on it.

Past history and owner would have made it a bargain at up to $15k .... was a damn shame the money had been spent on another vehicle.

History ... not so much milage is the important factor ... good servicing but a mines worklife does not, a good vehicle make.

In the end the choice is yours ... just do the usual checks for rough treatment, lack of servicing, body panel fit, maybe even a motor/fuel pump test etc and trust to making the right choice.

Oldsalty,
Much already said which I tend to agree with.

Look for one with the following:
Disc brakes - the drums were awful and struggled to pull up a laden vehicle
factory dual tanks
5 speed gearbox - the 4 speed was awful on the blacktop
With older ones look for mods which might make it illegal eg wheels and seats and costly to put right
problem with cracking the left front wheel arch if a dual battery installed badly

Take your time and don't rush. I bought a 94 1Hz, 2 seater model in basically sound condition for $8k and am happy with it now after upgrading suspension etc and fitting it out how we like it.

G'day salty, mine's an 85 model goes everywhere, just been to Innaminka/Birdsville/Big Red for a week, check my profile, age doesn't matter much, satisfy yourself with the mileage, rust is the biggest problem with age on these, check where it has spent most of it's life - that's a good guide, good luck! seee yaa, dingo
