David,

In regards to keeping members and offering something additional would it be possible to have a section of the Forum for members only??
This would allow the members who know each other to have OT posts that are exempt from the new rules/guidelines, For example my post from yesterday that was moderated as Chit Chat. This would allow socialisation between members and bring an added advantage to becoming a member. It could be that all members posts be deleted once a month from the system.

I have submitted this feedback as a thread to see if other members and visitors think this is an option that they would want.

Cheers Kev

If you want to just chat then send each other emails.

I for one get annoyed with threads that go on forever with idle banter that has no relevance.

My point is that it is a bit hard to email other members if you don't have their email address and you can only MM one person.

Hi kev,
I too would like to see a feature like that. That way it does keeps the "Chit Chat" out of the forum.
I can't remember who, but some one else mentioned 'A camp fire' kinda thing between Members.
I realize that there is the Member message system, but that is one on one, And it serves as a great system in it's self.
Like you said Kev, Members that have come to know each other relate and talk to each other differently than others, and this can be taken out of context sometimes. Which in turns gets people upset and confused about things.

Anybody can set up a chat room.
One member who must remain unnamed, did start an Exploroz Chatroom about 3 or 4 years ago, but there was way less OT posts & chat on the forum then & nobody was interested.
It isn't hard to do with either MSN or Yahoo.

Hairs,

That was me who made the "Camp Fire" comment

All I am suggesting is another option for David and his crew to consider. If it is not viable then so be it, we will have to make other arrangements.

All we can do is suggest things as David requested in member newsletter.

Cheers Kev

I was a player in the EO Chatroom that was setup and it also ended up requiring moderation, Oh my we do get out of hand at times. In fact there ended up TWO EO chatrooms and then both died a natural death. Hmmmmm I think the EO chatrooms should be called gatherings and we should do them in person.

I suggested a "campfire" idea some months back. That was on a day of heavy chit chat. MM are fine but only involve the two members concerned but an open chat room or "campfire" as I called it, would involve all that want to be involved simultaneously. And those that don't want chit chat can stay away from the campfire.

Kev,

Go to the Overlander forum and have a look at the Campfire section.

It is full of unfunny people cracking sick one liners and wasting a lot of server space. Then the ensuing punch ups occur, wasting moderators' time.

It's just the way these type of "free for all" sections tend to go. Sad, but true; they just become a sandpit.

Regards,

Jim.

>>Perhaps, what might be useful on this forum too, is a monthly thread which can be used for drivel and banter. Have seen >>it work well elsewhere.

The thread as suggested above could be a free for all thread which was deleted monthly. It could also serve as a chat facility ... which I believe is a nescessity ... on this forum. Additionally, comments about other posts could be brought up in the free for all thread, instead of ... and without affecting the original thread. e.g. " Did you see someone posted up that 'bleep' mud puddle again " ( I think its a great photo btw ... lol )

Many of the members and non-members are known to each other ( obviously ) and use this forum for regular contact. Hardly surprising, when you consider that without this forum, that aquaintance or friendship might never have occurred. Also a lot of people are linked because of what the forum contains e.g. vehicles, hobbies, locations, destinations .... attitudes ( LOL ) etc.

I do see a need for a campfire carry on facility as private messaging to one member is not the same as eliciting a response from the group.

Blue Box for comment ... Orange Box for replys ... perhaps a test of this proposal might be in order ????

Shane,

I am a member for a couple of years to come at least

I have just found out that there is an EO page on Facebook so Shaker will be pleased to know I am chatting on there.

It would still be good something could be done on this site though, by restricting it to members would mean that it would be optional for members to post in there or read for that matter.

Cheers Kev

When I first became a Member of ExplorOz,I had to feel my way

Members and some Visitors who first replied with a bit of Banter to
me, dont get me wrong, I'm not the Shy type, you can sense the
people you mainly Chat with have a bit of Comradery, I mainly chat
with your self Kev, and a few others like Mark, Hairs, Footy, Laura,
Doug and recently Jo, there are a few others that I like to reply to
who have a sense of Humour and Knowledge allso, Willem to me
is Like the God Father of ExplorOz, and I sense that some others feel that way, I reckon it would be of Great Benifit for every body to
have a Chit Chat at times, if you dont want to be part of it, dont

I have really enjoyed some of the banter between members as follow ups on legitimate topic posts (or thinly disguised as legitimate topics). We have had some literary geniuses here and i have had some really good laughs. It also helps us to get to know the personalities before we meet them on the road or wherever. I am not advocating open slather on off topic - but the good natured banter that goes on in follow ups does no harm, and adds to the friendly feel of this forum.

Kev, i don't see a short term chit chat board being of real value, but wouldn't like to see the fun in some of the threads totally moderated out. The forum has a theme, and keeping it on track is important.

Probably speaking out of turn here - but in for a penny in for a pound.

I as a visitor to this website can only say thati don't think i would PAY to be a member of a forum that is so heavily "mooderated".

1. Contributions is what makes forums, without generators of content (posters) there are no replies and hemce no forum.

2. Being a contributor takes effort - and to pay for taking that effort only to then have it summarily thrown in the bin - irks the contributors, sooner or later you lose the prime motivators who contribute then you effectively have no forum left.

3. I think I've had a message (PM) from a mooderator at O/lander forums once in my entire FREE membership of some years.

4. I've my own forums - so can post whatever I like on any topic any time it suits me - I don't NEED to pay to post something at someone elses forums, but still enjoy the experience occasionally when it suits me but I certainly wouldn't PAY to be a member where someone else decided if my topic, opinion, grammer, spelling etc meets with politocally correct thought for mooderators at the time.

5. IF a mooderator deems it necessary to edit a topic under the code of cinduct - thats what should happen - edit the topic to comply, don't delete it. At the same time alert the poster the topic has been edited to comply with the code of conduct and explain where it didn't comply, with COC, to justify the edit.

6. It is only common courtesy to advise if an edit occurs and why and a deletion should be a ast resort. Thats common courtesy for someone elses effort at typing a post - for some it is a major task...example - what if it is a disabled quadriplegic posting using his eye lids and a reading device from his hospital bed - a small post might take say an hour - how frustrating would it be to have that summarily deleted?.

7, Lastly - Mods should NOT delete posts because they don't agree with a persons statement (political position) -its a free country with freedom of expression laws & rights, they should be respected. Differing opinions is what makes poeople interesting, and we can all learn from others - there would be no point to a forum if ONLY like opinions are allowed.

Cheers

Hi Flywest,
Here is my thoughts on your post. Please don’t take offence to what I’m about to comment on.
Firstly you say that ” i don't think i would PAY to be a member of a forum that is so heavily "moderated".
I don’t believe people come here just for the forum, although some probably do, I am a member for all the great resources that this site offers, not just the forum.
1; Your first point; I agree with 100%
2; Being a contributor takes effort: Yes it does, there are so many factors to consider, they are too many to list, Background of other posters, age, sex, just to name three. ‘ summarily thrown in the bin - irks the contributors’ So are you suggesting that it be open slather? Sorry, there are rules, but isn’t life full of rules. If contributors feel they can not contribute any more may be the forum is not for them.
3; Not relevant. Sorry it’s not
4; “I don't NEED to pay to post something at someone else’s forums” Paying membership is not just about the forum. It is the members that alert the moderator to the post. It is not the moderators trolling through each thread looking for anything that breaks the terms and conditions that you agreed to, it’s your peers that bring it to the moderators attention. It’s not just you Flywest that has this idea that it is moderators editing and deleting posts. It’s a miss understanding that a lot of people are struggling to get their heads around. “grammar, spelling etc meets with politically correct thought” I don’t believe you would get pulled up for spelling, politically correctness, maybe if it was offensive.
5; obviously you are not a member of Whirlpool. This system works very well, as much as some hate it, it works. If it breaches forum rules, that is justification alone. In the site I just mentioned, if your post has been hidden, you are not notified, why? It has breach forum rules. That is enough, isn’t it?
6: I hope you not serious in this comment, because if the person you just described did breach forum rules it does not matter what physical or mental disability or handicap he or she has, if they post and their peers find it offensive and it is in breach of the forum rules it should be hidden or deleted.
7: If it is off topic, it is off topic; again you are jumping at shadows. I don’t believe a post would be deleted because the poster held a political view one way or the other. “Differing opinions is what makes people interesting” Yes you are right, that is what makes life so much fun,
It’s not just your post, but a lot of other people are confused about the moderators roll. As I understand it, A Visitor or Member finds a post Offensive, inappropriate, or it breaches the term & conditions Alerts a moderator, the moderator takes a look at the post. They then deicide if it has breached the rules and it is dealt with. If the moderator does not believe it as breached the terms, it stays. I’m sorry I can’t explain it any better.
May I add? I don’t have a problem with moderation. I’ve never had a problem with being judged by my peers.

Hi Flywest

Too much off topic stuff drives people away, as do abusive comment,s or people always pushing their own hangups. I believe in free speech, but the owners of this forum have a right to govern it as they see fit. The fact that it is a popular forum is proof of their good work. Keeping subject matter in line with the terms and conditions is just part of keeping the forum relevant to its members and contributors.

I have learned more about the character of EO contributers from O/T posts than from anything else except meeting a few face to face.
And yes, I'm a moderator elsewhere (now most of you didn't know that, did you ?).
"Our" forum is a topic specific one, fairly technical and can be somewhat boring at times. But there are enough O/T posts to generate a community spirit. It probably helps that I am aware of the background of many contributers (all 500).
And so boring tech discussions are often enjoyed more and by a wider range of readers than previously.
I must stress that entry to the group is restricted, to keep spammers and weirdos out. Occasionally one slips through but we just turf them out and apologize to the members.
As a moderator I am extremely lucky that we never deal with in and out groups, or contentious people or posts.
Such things should only happen around the camp fire.
So where is it ?

In the Newsletters a section for feedback on the articles would be handy. I looked through the new Members only newsletter and I couldn't spot any hyperlink to feedback. I think that that would be a handy inclusion.

Dunc,

Article feedback boxes are located in every article near the end of the page. I am not sure exactly what you mean about in the newsletter having a feedback item. Can you explain a little more?

Hi Sir Kev, I have been toying with thoughts of what to suggest regarding this topic, I am not very "forum" savvy as this is the only one I go into but this is from my perspective. I've only been a member for three years so am fairly new in comparison to others but here goes.

This is a public forum where people from of all walks of life get on, and behind a screen name (most) put up a topic which at that time takes their fancy. If I don't like a topic or if it doesn't take my fancy I don't open/ read it, Simple. If on the other hand I see one that I'm not interested in but it has a lot of replies and follow-ups I will go into it and usually find that I can get a laugh from it somewhere.

As far as chit chat is concerned, I have enjoyed and got a lot of laughs out of posts that seemed to go on for ever and where there is a lot of bantering going on, I have worked out who is pretty friendly with whom, there has even been times that I have put in my 2c worth. It is in these kind of posts where you work out personalities.

A "campfire" section has been mentioned hear and for my part I think it is a good idea if only for this reason, a lot of effort is put into getting EO gatherings up and running, now what happens at these gatherings? a group of like minded people get together and have a good time, become friends and then head back to their own State, what better forum is there to continue that friendship, by discussing their exploits whilst they were at the gathering, people like Hubby and I who haven't had the opportunity to get to one will only try a little harder for the next one.

Good suggestion Sir Kev and I am one who would support it rather than going to other forums or Facebook, Myspace etc.

I enjoy the forum as it is but am always open to change

My thoughts for what they're worth.

Cheers

D

Evening David, In the new Members newsletter and the other public newsletter there isn't a link at the bottom of the page as per the following line.
.
Treks | Places | Blogs | Weather | Fuel Prices | Trader | Shop | Directory | Advertise with Us
ExplorOz ® is owned and managed by I.T. Beyond Pty Ltd.

Is it possible to add a box for feedback.

I wanted to offer my appreciation for the Members only newsletter and to say I think it is a nice touch. No doubt in time there may be an article or whatever that would be worthy of making a comment via the feedback medium.

What do I know? Only learnt so many things from this site.

What do I get? I have met so many fantastic people who don't
laugh at my stupid question that they have told
everybody so many times before.

What type of ppl? Just average men & women who share my love
of 4WD & the great outdoors.

Attenting Meets? Makes me realise I am just as stupid as the
person camped nextdoor.
