I use
mine when near
the beach so don't really notice it over the ambient noise, what fuel you running it on? I used to use petrol but fould shellite burns much better and longer, maybe it's a fuel thing.
They are not quiet unless on low but I wouldn't say "jet engine" like so would suspect somethings up.
Everything is deconstructable and replaceable on these models so if there is a problem take it back.

Also get into the habit of lighting it on a firm surface,Because at some stage there may be a vapour build up and when you hit the piezo it will go bang and you'll drop the unit breaking it and filling up your undies as
well !Not a good start to the night..
It will not explode but the bang is quite loud...
Cheers

I have used a northstar for a time now, no issues, but can tell you following:-
runs brighter on unleaded.
At full tilt it does make noise, but throttle back untill noise stops and you wont lose light, there is a point just short of noise but max brilliance, with some playing you will find it.
If its really sounding like a jet, stop using it and fit a new mantle as its prob not on right and causing it to sing high pitched like that, and you cant refit them.
carry a spare pack of 3 mantles with you.
top top light but can have an appetite for mantles, and I will admit to stuffing a few by my own fault in clumsy fitting / wind.
With its stablemate the powerhouse stove, forms a perfect pair.
Just great using my powerhouse this weekend, very windy, but cooked like gas.
Gotta look at a top battery coleman for inside tent now also.
