I was winching some huge boulders from a landslide off a beach track the other day and burnt out one of my winch solenoids (Warn). I have now thrown them all out and fitted a solid state relay. I did this on the recommendation of a mate who reckons that's what 'everyone' is using these days ! The solid state reversing contacter is rated at 100 amps on 100% duty cycle. Has any one used one of these solid state devices and worked it hard (very hard) and had good results.

Would it have not been better to have dragged them with the vehicle , instead of wrecking the winch.

Hi Doug, Unfortunately we could not get a straight line pull to tow the boulders away from the track. There are several boulders that are way to big to move so by moving the ones that we did we can now zig-zag between the really big ones. By using a snatch block we could pull a few sideways a bit to give more room. Had to use a strap from the rear of the vehicle around another huge boulder to stop my vehicle being dragged to wards the one I was pulling at the time. Didn't have enough room to use another vehicle as an anchor.

I carry a length of plasma rope to use as a winch extension but it can also be used via a snatch block to tow things on an angle if winching isn't required.

Hi Kiwi,
I think you'll find a 100 amp relay of any construction will be way too small for an electric winch. (Unless the winch motor is down around 1kw and even then it would be marginal)
It would be very prudent to try winching your car up the driveway at home and see how hot the solid state relay gets.

Good idea Geoff, I need to rewind the amsteel rope so I will see what happens. Will see if I can borrow a dc clamp meter as
well.

I think you will need about 300 amps (under full load), 100 not enuff

I had A quick look and found that depending on what which you are using it could draw up too 500 amps

Hi Shane, That's what I thought hence my question here. My mate who has started doing winch challenges says that the competition vehicles are now using these integrated solenoid packs. I needed to have my winch operational in case it was needed on a trip I did today with a lot of inexperienced drivers. Only took about an hour to fit it yesterday, got rid of the large Warn solenoid control box and only need a three wire control lead. If it all works out ok I reckon it's the way to go.

Axle, a couple of sticks of power gel would have it all fixed in a couple of minutes but the locals would protest louder then the power gel ! The real problem is that some of the over zealous greenies on the local council say that 'it's nature at work and would rather that 4wd access was impossible hence a little sneaky winching.
