Hi guys
i have a GQ 2.8 turbo and have had overheating with a load in it towing the camper. Have had the radiator and engine flushed. No change. Had the thermostat replaced, no change. i have had an after market viscus clutch fan put in because genuine one not available at time i needed one. Mechanic seems to think it does not draw enough air through the radiator.
He says try a genuine Nissan clutch fan and a new
water pump may fix it but he does not know. He say we could try putting 2 thermo electric fans on the front of it.
I have heard since that 2.8s seem to have overheating problems when towing
Has anyone got any knowledge of this or any fix it ideas,
cheers

has had a new genuine Nissan thermostat. radiator rebuild, engine flush spent more than $700.00 so far and no change. It ran at 1/2 to 3/4 crossing the
hay plains and as soon as it hits a
hill up it goes to the top of the guage

Hi mate,
Had a similar problem with my Troopy, got so bad the aircon used to switch off.
Turned out to be the thermo fan was loosing oil.
Has this only come on since you replaced the fan?
Might be the answer.
Cheers,
Dennis

had the viscus clutch hub changed about three months ago in middle of winter. was about half the genuine part cost
Not a genuine nissan part because none were available in
adelaide.
have noticed the problem since the
snorkel, dual batteries has been put on. They shifted the overflow bottle up to the rear of the engine bay. Dont know if that makes any diff.

overflow bottle shifted shouldnt make any diff unless it has a crack or hole in the hose.
the
snorkel shouldnt effect it either.

I don't own a Nissan but I will recount the overheating problems with my 6.5l powered Troopy.
First thing I was told. ONLY USE A GENUINE VISCOUS HUB
Second thing was DON"T USE AN AFTERMARKET CORE> except for one that was designed by Brunswick for the purpose.
I choose the genuine radiator out off the late model 78 series.
The result has been outstanding as I can tow anything up to the legal weight with no problems at all.
Third thing Don't push it up hills as you over fuel and send the temp through the roof, I just pull back a gear or 2 so the revs are around 2 thousand, I get lots of air though the radiator via the viscous fan and I am not overfueling.
If all else is ok with the engine this may be the fix.
Brunswick diesel in WA can give you the part number of the core as they fit them to Nissan radiators as
well.
Have a good one

Totally agree with Rock Ape. I have had many vehicles overheat in my business. If all else checks out with the engine it is usually a radiator problem. It's not worth repairing them. Replace it with a quality one and the problem dissappears. Regards, Bob.

I have the same prop with my 4.2TDI when towing my jayco up some of the larger hills such as those on the f3 freeway coming back from north to south - fully loaded i think i weigh in at about 3.5t
untill i sort out the actual issue - i have found that if i leave the aircon turned off a few k's before the biggest and longest hills it does not heat up anywhere as much as when i have it turned on
Not a total solution for the problem - but a temp fix

Ok guys thanks for your imput.
i will get a genuine nissan viscus fan hub put on it and 2 thermo electric fans as
well.
See if this fixes the problem.
I always back off and let it crawl up the hills not over fueling it so thats not an issue but might help others who tow vans etc.
will post my results when it has been done
cheers

If the viscus hub can be taken apart ( ie Bolted together) you can buy the replacement silicon fluid - some of the aftermarket ones use a cheap version- now comes the hard part the best one to use is a toyota product if you can stand the thought of using toyo parts in your nissan it can solve your problem for a few dollars a lot cheaper than a new clutch

Ihad the same problem on my 2.8 GU. It turned out to be a blocked radiator. Flushing wont clear it. I had the top & bottom tanks removed & the core "rodded" to clean it. My mechanic said it was 60% blocked. No problems since.
