In one simple answer to your question " When its out of 4WD should the front tail shaft be able to be turned by hand ?" YES . When its locked in 4WD the front tail shaft is now locked and cant be turned by hand, out of 4WD and it now free wheeling so yes it can be turned by hand.

You dont state where the vibration is coming from

Thanks for that. Its what I thought have not had anything to do with so just wanted to make sure that I'm on the right track.
What is happening is that there is a constant vibration coming from drive line.I think that it is in 4WD all the time but free wheeling.
Have had new uni joints fitted, new tyres fitted and balanced.

I forgot to mention that you should check to make sure the front hubs are not in the LOCK position. Had the same problem with my 4Runner until I realised that despite having taken the selector lever out of 4WD, I had forgotten to stop the vehicle and unlock the fron hubs. Must have been having a SENIORS moment that particular day :)) Was there any vibration prior to the new tyres being fitted ??

Yes vibration was there prior to new tyres.
It looks like the hubs are still locked in because we have just jacked up the front wheel and turned it and the front shaft is still turning.

I guess you have solved the problem. Hopefully by the time this has reached you , you will tell me that the vibration has gone. Its so easy to forget to unlock the front hubs. It only takes a slight distraction and you forget ( Well, at least I do ) what you were doing. Hope it all works out and nothing more than two front hubs that were still in the LOCK position. Cheers.

They are automatic hubs so will have to get them checked out.
Or can you overide them some how?

Ok, just made a phone call to someone who has a vehicle similar to yours and here is what he says: here is what you do. Jack up the vehicle - again. Locate the plug that goes into the front diff, and pull the plug off. This will automatically disengage the front diff. Also make sure that the front diff locker button on the transfer case is disengaged before you go to all the trouble of jacking the vehicle up and down again. Because its all electrical, water/sand/mud/grit could have got into the solenoid, si may be a case of taking it to your local Nissan dealer to fix the problem. Have a think about fitting manual locking hubs - saves a lot of hassles such as the ones you are currently having.
