Hi Gang,

The wife and I are just about to set off for a two week camping tour Leaving from Canberra then heading to Echuca (Via Jindabyne, Thredbo, Glenrowan), Ballarat, Great Ocean Road, Mt Gambier, Halls gap, and then Lakes Entrance.
our camping spots are fairly picked already, Except Echuca.
I have been looking at Google and there appears to be a state park right on the bank of the Murray in Echuca. does anybody know if you can camp there?
we are after free camping (or as close to free camping goes nowa days) very close or in Echuca that is situated on the Murray.
we are self sufficient and dont need or want to stay at a caravan park).

01x17,

According to Camps4 there are several free overnight stops around Echuca. I have'nt stayed at any of them.

Christie's Beach Campground. 8.5km E of Echuca. That's probably the one you mean. Seems OK with dunnies, fireplaces, shade, pets allowed etc. It's in Echuca Regional Park.

We have stayed at Christies Beach, it does have long drop dunnies, and in good condition.

Bring your own firewood though, it is quite scarce there, as in most popular places.

It is a very nice camping area with many spots along the river front.

Hi
There is a very good, little and cheap book that covers camping and river access around Echuca, and is available through the Explor Oz shop.
Murray River Access Map Book

The best camping we found is situated at Barmah Forest and we stayed there a couple of times and it has a good swimming lake and basic Pit toilets and it is free. It is only about 15 to 20 klms from Echuca. Sorry for the late replay been to busy enjoying camping in Tassie. Cheers

Thanks for the advice guys,
Tassie, thats one place on the list to do. hope you had a ball.
we will be in Echuca for 3 nights so to spice things up a bit, we might stay at each one suggested, and see which one is the best.
once again thanks for the help.
4 days to go........ bloody hell it goes slow, especially when your counting down the minutes

We were at Christie's Beach 2 days ago. Nice spot, but FULL of speed boats and skiers. Very noisey.

We're now at Police Paddocks just outside Rutherglen - much quieter spot.

We camped at The Five Mile, West of Moama, overlooking the Murray. It is free camping, no facilities. Position? Five miles West of Moama in a lovely spot. There is a boat ramp there but we saw no boats.
