G'Day All,
Posting this on behalf of the organising committee, hope some of you may be able to join in:
For the past 21 years, the
Simpson Desert Bike Challenge and constantly are faced with riders unable to obtain support crews. The event involves cyclists riding for 5 days (590km) from
Purni Bore to
Birdsville along the
Rig Road and Inner
Birdsville Track. Each rider must have their own support crew (and 4WD vehicle) capable of transporting them to and from the race, as
well as carrying their food,
water and
camping equipment. Crews must be prepared to support the riders during the event. The riders will be exhausted at the end of the stages and capable of little more than standing. They will need to set up and pack up
camp, prepare meals and take care of the riders needs. Our aim is to try and match up riders with support crews from their own state. It is up to the riders and crews to negotiate suitable reimbursement for the crews costs. If your interested in participating in the 2009 event, your welcome to contact me or visit or website at www.desertchallenge.org. Those who have limited 4WD experience are very welcome to participate as we have many experience drivers to lend a helping hand.
Your Sincerely
Mark Polley

Gday Mark,
Why do you hold the event in October instead of during the cooler months. Is it just to add that extra bit of toughness to the event or other reasons.

G'Day Dean,
To be listed as one of the top five most difficult events in the world means that it could neither be held in the middle of winter, nor in the middle of a capital city.
The weather is as variable as other conditions and special initiatives are put in place to protect the health of competitors.
If it were easy everyone would do it.
Hope this helps
